I try to be "Eco friendly" but have you done all of the math?

A good friend of mine commented yesterday about the electric automobile. According to him, it was a God sent, and would get X amount of miles per gallon.  (Still not sure how you equate watts to gallons)

As he was touting the savings that would be made from using an electrically powered vehicle, I asked him what he thought the impact would be to his electric bill while he was charging his car up.

What do you think?

Larry,

Last I heard it's about .50 to "fill-er-up" charge the batteries on an all electric vehicle.  The challenge comes when the batteries wear out.  As near as I can tell the hybrid cars are "throw-away" cars at 100K miles. They won't be worth the high cost to replace the batteries.  But a number of the hybrids are warranted for the 1st 100K miles.  he math is still fuzzy until the technology for batteries improves.

JMHO,

Steve

Steve, and how do you dispose of the batteries?

Larry,

Lead Acid batteries are only recycled in this day and age. In fact it's against the law not to.  Commercial recyclers are paid. Lead is a commodity now.  I can't speak for how the plastic casings are handled however.

Larry ~ I try to do what I can too. I like big cars...SUVs and all. When I was looking for something new last year, I was set on getting a Tahoe Hybrid to 'do my part'. That was...until I did the math. With most of my driving being highway driving from one part of Louisville to the next, I realized that I would be burning through much more gas (the Hybrid actually has a higher displacement than the regular Flex-Fuel gas engine). Always do you math before 'going green'...it might not add up.
