Home Appliances:
- Turn your refrigerator down. Refrigerators accounts for about 20% of household electricity use. Set your fridge at about 37 degrees and your freezer at 3 degrees. You can find a thermometer at most hardware stores.
- Set your washer to cold or warm. Using a good laundry detergent make a world of difference
- Run your dishwasher only when it is full. Use the energy saving setting and allow it to air dry.
- Turn down your water heater thermostat to 120 degrees
- If it is time to upgrade or to replace look for the appliances with the e energy star logo ( some appliances offer a rebate) check http://www.energystar.gov/ website for information
Home heating and cooling
- Be careful to not overheat or over cool you home. In winter set your thermostat at 68 degree s during the daytime and 55 degrees at night. In summer keep the thermostat around 78 degrees
- Clean or replace your air filters as recommended
Small homes improvement
- When replacing light bulbs, replace them with compact fluorescent bulbs. They cost more initially but will save you money in the long run.
- Wrap your water heater in a insulated jacket. Cost $10 to $20.
- Install Low flow shower heads. You will save hot water and the cost is minimal.
- Weatherize your home using caulk and weather stripping to plug air leaks.
