Thinking of something to do in Raleigh that you may not have done before?
How about visiting the recently reopened North Carolina Museum of Art, located on Blue Ridge Rd?
The brand new West building, opened in March of 2010, has over 127,000 square foot of space to display the over 5000 pieces that make up the permanent collection of the museum's art.
"The 164-acre campus is the nation's largest art museum park, with walking paths, bike trails, ecological projects conceived with artists, and site-specific commissioned works of art in a rolling green landscape."
Welcoming you to the center court between the new West building and the East building, which is currently being remodeled to house special exhibits, is a lovely row of water fountains.
Being that this is at an art museum, I'm sure these fountains are symbolic of something, but not being an art major type, I don't know what. They do create a very peaceful separation between the sidewalk and the outdoor eating area.
The new West building is one story and built so that it the North facing roof lets in an abundance of natural daylight. 362 custom ceiling coffers and skylights diffuse and filter natural light into galleries.
The Museum received a gift of 30 sculptures by renowned artist Auguste Rodin when it opened it's new building, which are seen here in the Rodin gallery.
Each wing of the building houses different eras or origins of art. This colorful costume is part of the African art exhibit.
The best part of this wonderful museum is that admission is FREE! (except for some special exhibits, special films, or tours)
