Sunrise Energy Ventures is building a new solar energy facility here in the mountains of Murphy North Carolina.  Land has been cleared on Burger Road in the Ranger community and installation of the new solar collectors is underway.

According to Joe Tierney, an analyst at Sunrise Energy Ventures, plans call for a 990 kilowatt system at the site.

The power that will be generated by this facility is equivalent to taking 180 cars off the road or making 140 homes instantly green.

The rectangular panels are being installed on property leased from a local landowner and the facility being built is part of a program offered by the TVA.

Blue Ridge Mountain EMC, the local electric company, will use the power generated to serve local customers.

This is one of several projects in various stages of development here in the Southern mountains by Sunrise Energy Ventures, a Minnesota-based company.  When I asked why the company chose to bring a facility to Murphy, Tierney explained that this is a location where solar energy facilities are cost effective, but that is not the case in all parts of the country.
