Last week my firm launching a team of brave, follicle-ly-blessed men to grow some pretty sweet mustaches during the month of November to raise awareness and funds for the effort to bid prostate cancer "Adios". We invited friends / family to join what is known as Movember, a month dedicated to changing your appearance in effort to raise prostate cancer awareness and funds for research. LiveSTRONG and the Prostate Cancer Foundation will benefit from the donations, and we are proud to say over $1,000 has already been pledged to our team by Day 3!
The Juice Team sported some stellar ‘staches of our own to kick off the event as witnessed in our company photo! We invited our friends/family to join the team and spread the word. The Juice Gentleman have all dedicated to growing their own personal ‘stache, which required one of our agent/brokers shaving his goatee of 15years! Team photos and updates will be posted to our company's facebook page each week.
We quickly realized the impact Prostate Cancer has inflicted on many of our 'Mo Bros and Mo Sistas'. The statistics below tell more of the story and explains why so many have responded:
The Stats:
- 1 in 6 US men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer- a new case is diagnosed every 2.4 minutes.
- A man is 35% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than a woman is to be diagnosed with breast cancer.
- 218,000 men will be diagnosed in 2010 and 32,00 will lose their lives to the disease.
- Prostate cancer is over 90% curable -if detected and treated in its earliest stages.
- While there are cases of prostate cancer showing up in younger men, it is recommended that men begin an annual screening at age 50 and at age 40 if there is a family history.
So encourage those around you to participate in Movember! Simple awareness could mean inviting, or reminding, those gents around you to get regular health checks and preventative screening tests. Talking about men's health issues, or visiting the doc every now and again, doesn't make us less manly.... especially when sporting a Mo!
