Who's Your Major Competitor?? Mine is You....Am I Yours???

So nicely said, Barbara. Real Estate is a survival business - if you don't will, someone else will! Wow! I'd extend little bit on her last statement - competition is a fact of life in ANY FIELD - not just in real estate.

Yesterday, there was a post written byLoreena Yeo, and I haven't stopped thinking about it.  Loreena and many commenters stated that they only compete with themselves.  Loreena and I usually agree on concepts, but this one is an exception.  I'm having a difficult time understanding this concept.

We're in a very competitive profession.  We have competitors all around us, and regardless of your niche, there is competition.  How do you know where to set the bar, when you do not acknowledge having competitors?  If you are not competing with others in your profession, how do you know if what you are doing will be enough?

To describe what you do as "competing with yourself" is a way of alleviating the stress of acknowledging that other agents are your competitors.  Stress interferes with the flow of production.  Eliminating competition is to eliminate stress in your mind, but it is impossible to eliminate it in reality.  You must always be conscious of others, and you must conduct yourself in a fashion that allows you to be the victor over your competition.

Real estate is a survival business If "YOU" don't win, someone else will.  You MUST compete to survive or you will eliminate yourself from the industry.  Is competing with yourself an acceptable way of justifying a potential loss?  No one wins them all, and I have learned to accept a loss along the way.  No one is #1 forever.  There's always someone in the wings who will beat you at your own game!!!

In my mind, every day is a day of competing.  We compete for listings, buyers, subdivisions and a laundry list of other categories.  We're in sales, and that word is synonymous with competition.

My team and I are listing agents.  Whenever it's "show time" you're in a competition.  You're being judged by the person (seller) interviewing you.  Your competition is every agent who is also providing a presentation.  It's a one shot deal.  Win or lose!!!  Go home with the spoils or an empty bag!!  Every listing presentation is a learning experience that will make you more powerful with your delivery, and each listing you close will make you a stronger agent.

In this business, you will always be competing with others.  There will always be someone who does it better.  You win some, you lose some.  Stay sharp and be prepared to compete.  Competition is a fact of life in the real estate business.  Now that I've explained my thoughts, I'm all ears to hear yours, especially if they differ from mine.
