Steps you can take to help make your home NOT burglar friendly
About 15 years ago, I had someone that walked into our front door, grabbed my then-wife's purse, and off he went as silent as a mouse. We didn't even know that it happened. There are no guarantees, but there are steps you can take to help make your home not burglar friendly.
The police had a very good idea who it was, but they said they could never catch him in the act. He only took cash and threw away the purse or wallet just a few doors down from where ever he stole it so he never had any evidence on him. So off we went to the neighbor's, and sure enough, 3 doors down we found her purse, completely intact including credit cards.
The first thing I changed, when you open any exterior door, you hear it. The police said to make it so that all your doors create a good solid sound that you will hear when opened. Buy bells that you can hang on the door so when anybody opens the door it makes noise. It may seem like a big deal, but it is not. You very quickly get used to the sound.
Something else, burglars don't like light. Make sure all of your exterior doors have lights on them. Some people will place motion detectors on them so they aren't on all night. Personally I think the dark door still attracts burglars, even if the light comes on when someone approaches. You can go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy timers to replace the switch for the exterior lights. I have timers on all three of my exterior door lights. The timers can be set for a wide variety of on and off times, too many really. I have CFL's in all my exterior light fixtures. My house is lit up!
There you have it, 2 simple Steps you can take to help make your home NOT burglar friendly.
