Responding to requests from Civil Rights Attorneys and First Amendment Advocates, as well as media organizations, Florida Chief Justice Charles Canady has ordered judges throughout the state to open up foreclosure proceedings.

Florida law requires that court proceedings are open to the public and the media, including foreclosures, however some judges have banned the public and media from attending foreclosure cases, not always just because they were held in judges' chambers (due to the workload).

Chief Justice Canady expressed in his letter that judges should ensure they are not "violating the rights of Floridians by improperly closing judicial proceedings to the public."  "The courts of Florida belong to the people of Florida.  The people of Florida are entitled to know what takes place in the courts of this state."
