Dobbin House in Gettysburg Pa
Civil War Hospital - Underground Railroad Stop
The Dobbin House in Gettysburg Pa is probably the most historic building in the Gettysburg Borough, it is also the oldest building in the borough. Reverend Alexander Dobbin purchased the land that Dobbin House now sits in 1774 and built the building in in 1776. Besides serving as a home to the large Dobbin family, Mr. Dobbin had 10 children and 9 step children, the building was meant to serve as a Classical School. The first academy of it's kind west of the Susquehanna River.
The Dobbin House Spring House Tavern
The Dobbin House is built in the Georgian style, was built with local stone, and features seven fireplaces, and hand carved woodwork that has been restored to it's original 18th century grandeur. You will notice some distinctive features of the Georgian style, windows with double hung sashes, row of small windows above the front door, paneled door. During the famous Battle of Gettysburg the Dobbin House served as a hospital and later as a stop on the underground railroad.

When visiting the Adams County Gettysburg Pa area, take some time out from your Battlefield roaming and enjoy a nice lunch or dinner at the Dobbin House.Today the Dobbin House is home to a popular restaurant by same name. Dining choices include the more formal dining rooms, or my favorite the Spring House Tavern. The tavern is cooled by three natural springs that still run today. The structure is quite impressive and upon entering one is instantly transported to a Revolutionary time period.
