Every city has its list of iconic things. In Austin that means Barton Springs Pool, Zilker Park, Mount Bonnel and countless music venues and restaurants. One of those eateries is Katz's Deli. Located on West 6th Street, the moniker Katz's Never Closes was literally true for over thirty years, Katz's was open twenty four hours a day. The yellow convertible Cadillac parked outside was a beacon for many a hungry eater.
If you weren't inclined to cook on Thanksgiving or Christmas, Katz's was there with a hot pastrami sandwich. If you visited Sixth Street, for some late night partying- as many of us have over the years, Katz's was on your way home, with their signature fried pickles and ranch dressing.
Our fair city is changing before our very eyes. Some call it growth, others lament it. Ether way, Katz's has been a landmark eating establishment in a city full of them. If you've never been, check it off your Austin list. Those of you who have been, may want to stop by and send an old friend off
