What makes a town "hot" in Massachusetts? Okay, it certainly has nothing to do with the thermometer because today was the coldest day in 5 years with -3 degrees at 7am. Since relocating buyers so frequently ask what towns are the most desirable as well the most affordable when they are planning where to live in Massachusetts, the topic is worth exploring.
The Massachusetts towns that seem to be the "hot" towns are those that are relatively affordable, have good school systems and with close proximity to highways and commuter rail service to Boston. RE/MAX of New England's 2011 Housing Outlook Report was just released and indicates "active towns were in Greater Boston and MetroWest, where proximity to good-paying jobs from Boston's education, medical and business environment held strong."
These metro west towns include Franklin, Hopkinton, Shrewsbury, Southborough, and Westborough. All of these towns have held strong during the recent recession and have been somewhat resistant to the market fluctuations. In terms of foreclosures or short sales, these 5 towns combined do not come close to the foreclosure rates of some small towns located in the western part of the state.
