Here is February's Insurance installment from Ketty Wilcoxen. She is available to help you with your insurance needs and can provide you with a no-obligation quote on many different types of insurance.
Today, Ketty will be reviewing things you should know when searching for Homeowners Insurance.
- Your homeowners insurance will be based on the cost of rebuilding your home. Make sure that you have an idea/estimate of the cost so that you are not underinsured.
- Do your shopping. There are many insurance carriers out there and they are not all the same. By using a broker, you are having someone do the comparison shopping for you.
- Don't just look at the price of the policy. Make sure that you are properly covered, and note financial ratings, claims processing, etc.
- Question the basic policy, as it may not cover you properly. There are optional endorsements that may need to be added to the policy (example: water backup, extended replacement)
- Take advantage of discounts (multi-policy, good student, alarm, etc.)
- Try to select a higher deductible which will reduce your insurance premium.
- In most cases, your credit, claim history, occupation, etc. will have an impact on your insurance premium.
- Review your policy at least once every year or two. Insurance carriers may change their pricing and it is possible that you could be overpaying for your insurance.
