8 Things You Should Know About Homeowners Insurance

By

Here is February's Insurance installment from Ketty Wilcoxen.  She is available to help you with your insurance needs and can provide you with a no-obligation quote on many different types of insurance.

Today, Ketty will be reviewing things you should know when searching for Homeowners Insurance.

  1. Your homeowners insurance will be based on the cost of rebuilding your home. Make sure that you have an idea/estimate of the cost so that you are not underinsured.
  2. Do your shopping. There are many insurance carriers out there and they are not all the same. By using a broker, you are having someone do the comparison shopping for you.
  3. Don't just look at the price of the policy. Make sure that you are properly covered,  and note financial ratings, claims processing, etc.
  4. Question the basic policy, as it may not cover you properly. There are optional endorsements that may need to be added to the policy (example: water backup, extended replacement)
  5. Take advantage of discounts (multi-policy, good student, alarm, etc.)
  6. Try to select a higher deductible which will reduce your insurance premium.
  7. In most cases, your credit, claim history, occupation, etc. will have an impact on your insurance premium.
  8. Review your policy at least once every year or two. Insurance carriers may change their pricing and it is possible that you could be overpaying for your insurance.

Some great advice on homeowners insurance. I see some polices with such a low premium I worry that they don't have sufficient coverage and shopped only on the lowest price.
