Despite The Economy This Profession Still Attracts New and Former Agents!

By
Real Estate Agent with BCR Realtors 262359

I love the real estate profession. This March marks my 33 year in sales.  Having witnessed and survived a couple of downturns and comebacks in the economy I have seen a lot of agents come and go, and a few individuals come back and leave and come back to the profession several times over

And I am very amazed and excited  about  a new breed of agent that we just didn't see 20 years ago. Back then and before so many agents were individuals retiring from their first career......school teachers, government employees, you name it. But now we see lots  young people in college in our area who actually know early on before they graduate that they want to be a professional Realtor. And furthermore they also know whether they want to specialize in commercial , residential , or property management. They are today's new agent! They are focused, they are technically gifted, and they are really smart.  And for the most part a large number of them are not afraid of the "BIG  W"  word....... ( Work  ).  They are full time professionals.

  • So why is it that not only do so  many former agents return to the profession over and over ? I feel many  former agents return to the business because they really  do love the profession more than any other.  But most who do return,  continue to make the same old mistakes they made the first , second , or even third go round.
  •  What is the lure that continues to draw new agents to Real Estate sales despite the economy?  I feel our profession epitomizes the American Dream of entrepreneurship and private enterprise. "There is gold in them thar hills just a waiting to be discovered!"  A new listing around every corner and a new buyer prospect in every email lead!
  •  Is it Addicting? You betcha! But it is a good addiction that one has to learn to understand and manage.

Yes,  and in spite of our economy. And besides the fact that new home sales are in the ditch right now ....the real estate profession is still alive and well and  a lot those who hang in there will be smelling green again in the not to distant future! And I believe that this is the truly magnet that smart new agents are drawn to.

Trey,

I have to say, I love this blog and you hit it when you say it becomes addicting.

Best Wishes,

We are all just adrenalin junkies!  My sister (who actually lives in Bryan, Texas) just made the comment to me a couple of weeks ago that she just didn't know how I did it - not having a regular paycheck.  This is currently a profession that is not for the "faint of heart".....

One thing we know you are in control of your destiny; same in home inspecting. No paycheck until a home has entered into contract status. Each day you build your business on how well you do your business and perform by serving the customer with your industry knowledge. It is addictive.

I love that you are seeing some recycled agents coming back Trey. Maybe you can teach the old dogs NEW tricks this go around. They probably never heard of real estate blogging.

Trey, thanks for recognizing and blogging about this trend. You're a 33-year veteran who's still on the cutting edge; I admire that. :)

I went from high school to real estate "apprenticeship" with just a year in between. I've been told that I entered the business at "exactly the wrong time"... but I don't feel that way. If I can build a business under adverse conditions, I'll be better for it. With droves of agents leaving the business due to the rough conditions, there's a large market share to be captured by those ready and able to work hard.

I have suffered from this Realtor addiction for the last fifteen ( wonderful ) years!  It is a great job but  it does take commitment and hard work to survive being self employed!  Only the strong survive!

No doubt this is a competitive and difficult job. You gotta love it to stay in it more than a few years.
