Amity Gardens seems on the verge of becoming the next great renovation market in Charlotte, NC real estate. It has much in common with Madison Park just a few miles away and is booming. Cute 1950's all brick homes, many of which have been taken care of and just need some updating. The yards are large by city standards, over .25 acres often, and the age of the neighborhood helps to provide great character. If the new subdivisions outside the I-485 beltway could transfer the character of Amity Gardens to their own they would sell out in a snap. This kind of character comes only with time however. Amity Gardens is situated by several transportation routes that give access to the Center City of Charlotte in just 15 minutes; a real quality of life booster for most residents.
Why then are neighborhoods such as Madison Park and Selwyn Park booming while sales in Amity Gardens are steady yet unspectacular? Schools, schools, schools! It seems to be the name of the game in Charlotte. The growth of home schooling is helping and if school vouchers ever become popular that might be a huge boom, but until the differences in schools is addressed these hidden gems will remain just that.
It does appear that Peter Gorman the new Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools superintendent is serious about improving matters and he just might be the catalyst that these once great-deserve to be great again neighborhoods need. Don't get me wrong, these are not bad places to live. In fact the Amity Gardens of the city are great places, they just deserve the same kind of attention that areas to the North and South of Charlotte are receiving.
