Charlotte, NC Real Estate: Schools drive the bus

Amity Gardens seems on the verge of becoming the next great renovation market in Charlotte, NC real estate.  It has much in common with Madison Park just a few miles away and is booming.  Cute 1950's all brick homes, many of which have been taken care of and just need some updating.  The yards are large by city standards, over .25 acres often, and the age of the neighborhood helps to provide great character.  If the new subdivisions outside the I-485 beltway could transfer the character of Amity Gardens to their own they would sell out in a snap.  This kind of character comes only with time however.  Amity Gardens is situated by several transportation routes that give access to the Center City of Charlotte in just 15 minutes; a real quality of life booster for most residents.

Why then are neighborhoods such as Madison Park and Selwyn Park booming while sales in Amity Gardens are steady yet unspectacular?  Schools, schools, schools!  It seems to be the name of the game in Charlotte.  The growth of home schooling is helping and if school vouchers ever become popular that might be a huge boom, but until the differences in schools is addressed these hidden gems will remain just that.

It does appear that Peter Gorman the new Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools superintendent is serious about improving matters and he just might be the catalyst that these once great-deserve to be great again neighborhoods need.  Don't get me wrong, these are not bad places to live.  In fact the Amity Gardens of the city are great places, they just deserve the same kind of attention that areas to the North and South of Charlotte are receiving.

I live in amity gardens...and love it.  It's quiet, beautiful, and most of all I have a quality built home and got it for a song by charlotte's standards.  And just to clear up the distance from center city -- it's never taken me more than 10 minutes, even during rush hour.  5 minutes is all it takes during off hours.  This hidden gem is starting to be not so hidden anymore.  Get it while U can!!

I researched neighborhoods for months before I bought my house a few years ago. Amity Gardens and Oakhurst were the only two affordable neighborhoods that had the low crime rate that was a priority for me. The location is perfect. I am five minutes away from Uptown, fifteen from UNCC, and twenty from South Charlotte. I can get to Matthews or the airport in less time than it takes most Charlotte residents to wind their way out of their developments. Independence is a block away, but I hardly ever hear the traffic. My yard is a half acre full of beautiful, mature trees, and my neighbors are incredibly friendly.

great hidden gem neighborhood in charlotte.  in between cotswold, the plaza, and matthews - easy access to everything.  the city needs to take care of the old independence and amity shopping centers though.  such an eyesore!  would be great for a park, small grocery shopping center, or even some residences with great views.
