Surviving Your Serengeti

After reading Sally Weatherley's post I couldn't resist this AR challenge.  The name of Stefan Swanepoel's new book, Surviving your Serengeti, immediately caught my attention.  I was in Krueger National Park in South Africa on my first safari this past September and now my husband and I are anxious to go to the Serengeti.  I eagerly downloaded the first two chapters and took the quiz.

Upon arriving in Africa, I had the same reaction as the books main characters, Sean and Ashley.  There is something magical and awe inspiring about being in the midst of the animals in the wild.  There is this raw power and energy that surrounds you.  Call it humbling.  It is one place where you feel like you don't know it all or have it under control.   And in that knowing there is a certain freedom--a certain sense of peace.

As Stefan points out, these animals survive, and have honed the skills they need to survive.  Their everyday "reality" is uncertainty, fear, and a tragic demise, which is brought home if you have ever seen a lion on a kill in the wild.  It made me wonder if we spend too many hours of our lives in "controlled" environments and "knowing" so that we are missing what it is like to be alive.

The first two chapters simply whet my appetite as the story of Sean and Ashley unfolds and we get a glimpe into the concept of the unique skills of each animal.  But I was lucky, because apparently I am a wildebeest, and that is the animal covered in the second chapter.  Resiliency, endurance and focus--I have that in droves.  No comments on their incredible good looks.  I believe our Kruger National Park guide (pictured above) referred to them as the animal made by God with spare parts.  That's just fine--adversity breeds endurance and other fine traits, since apparently we know we can't survive on just our good looks . . . .

I am definitely awaiting March 1 to read the rest of Stefan's insights into the other animals:  lion, crocodile, giraffe, mongoose, elephant and cheetah, and maybe learn more about my new friend, the wildebeest.  What will Sean learn in his three days in the Serengeti and what insights will Zachariah Makena share with us?  Should be a fascinating story.

You can take the quiz right now and find out which animal you are and begin learning more about your traits.

This post is submitted thanks to an Active Rain Challenge

Janet - Oh my gosh - you are extremely efficient!  You wrote this with just hours to spare - I'm impressed!  Thanks for the shout out, too.  That's so cool that you've actually been to the Serengeti.  I also love how your guide described the Wildebeest:  "the animal made by God with spare parts" - too funny!

Hi Sally--You were my inspiration.  And since I'm in Hawaii I did think I had way more time than I actually did.  But I loved your post, downloaded the first two chapters and I guess I got inspired!

Janet - love your Serengeti Challenge post and I visited the Serengeti and would love to go to South Africa. You will love the Serengeti as I'm sure I will love South Africa - hope the plane ride isn't too much longer than getting to Tanzania! And, by the way - you do also have the "Good looks!"

Janet, from one wildebeest to another, this was a good review of the first two chapters. You had the additional insight of having somewhat experienced what Stefan was describing in the book, although not in the Serengeti itself, so your take on his fable has, imho, much more weight.

Leilana--Greetings to Granite Bay--almost bought a house there once.  No, I certainly never thought the safari in South Africa would end up on AR.  Never know the future, do we?

Tim--Greetings to Madison, where my grand kids are!  Africa is a remarkable experience--you have to experience it!

Kristine--After we get to the Serengeti and you get to South Africa we will have to swap stories . . .  and thanks for the compliment!

William--I think the appeal of the challenge for me was largely based on our trip to South Africa, and reading those first two chapters brought it alive again.  Thanks for your comments, fellow wildebeest.

Sharon--It was a phenomenal trip.  One that we can't wait to repeat.

Tim--I will be in Madison from April 17 until May 16.  Let's get together!

Maureen--Being on a safari and that close to wildlife is beyond amazing.  The first day we were there we had a pride of lions walking behind the jeep.  You could almost have reached out and touched them.  Nature is beyond spectacular.
