After reading Sally Weatherley's post I couldn't resist this AR challenge. The name of Stefan Swanepoel's new book, Surviving your Serengeti, immediately caught my attention. I was in Krueger National Park in South Africa on my first safari this past September and now my husband and I are anxious to go to the Serengeti. I eagerly downloaded the first two chapters and took the quiz.
Upon arriving in Africa, I had the same reaction as the books main characters, Sean and Ashley. There is something magical and awe inspiring about being in the midst of the animals in the wild. There is this raw power and energy that surrounds you. Call it humbling. It is one place where you feel like you don't know it all or have it under control. And in that knowing there is a certain freedom--a certain sense of peace.
As Stefan points out, these animals survive, and have honed the skills they need to survive. Their everyday "reality" is uncertainty, fear, and a tragic demise, which is brought home if you have ever seen a lion on a kill in the wild. It made me wonder if we spend too many hours of our lives in "controlled" environments and "knowing" so that we are missing what it is like to be alive.
The first two chapters simply whet my appetite as the story of Sean and Ashley unfolds and we get a glimpe into the concept of the unique skills of each animal. But I was lucky, because apparently I am a wildebeest, and that is the animal covered in the second chapter. Resiliency, endurance and focus--I have that in droves. No comments on their incredible good looks. I believe our Kruger National Park guide (pictured above) referred to them as the animal made by God with spare parts. That's just fine--adversity breeds endurance and other fine traits, since apparently we know we can't survive on just our good looks . . . .
I am definitely awaiting March 1 to read the rest of Stefan's insights into the other animals: lion, crocodile, giraffe, mongoose, elephant and cheetah, and maybe learn more about my new friend, the wildebeest. What will Sean learn in his three days in the Serengeti and what insights will Zachariah Makena share with us? Should be a fascinating story.
