Vacation? Realtors Aren't Allowed to Vacation!

By
Real Estate Agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices

Sadly, it's true, Realtors aren't allowed to go on vacation.  Or, at least, that's what some sellers believe.  It doesn't matter that we work 7 days a week and all hours of the day AND night, even on holidays.  When a seller believes they've hired us to sell their home, whether it takes 3 months, 6 months, a year or, for luxury estates, years, they don't believe we should leave town, even if we have another realtor ready and willing to cover our business.

After more than two decades in this business, this is still somewhat of a taboo subject with my sellers. I realize this is an unrealistic expectation and that MOST sellers do understand that everyone needs time off, but in this market, when so many sellers are in a financial hurt, I find it difficult to take time off.  My emotions get the better of me and I feel like I owe it to my sellers to be here for them 24/7/365.  So, is it really the few sellers that expect this of me or is it just my emotions feeling for so many financially distressed clients that keep me from taking time off to recharge.  I'd love to hear some feedback on how you deal with this subject.

I tell my clients up front I will have time off, not just for vacation, but for life.  I also let them know what I will have up and running all the time even when I am asleep and I introduce them to my team members in person and online so that when they take over for me no one is surprized.

I find that most clients are understanding when you have a vacation planned. I always let them know in advance, and make sure that I have an agent lined up to cover for me. I also answer their phone calls and emails as much as I can while I am gone.

In my opinion, vacations and days off are off set by the freedom of the industry.  Excellent question.
