The Month of March ... Celebrating the Inner Irish in All of Us - Chapter 6

To whet your appetite and help you prepare to celebrate the upcoming MAJOR INTERNATIONAL HOLIDAY, St. Patrick's Day, I thought I would share a few photos and a wee bit of the story about a trip we made to Ireland. I will post a wee bit each day until St. Patty's day. Hope you will follow along.

Wee Bit No. 6 -The flight from Boston to Shannon is five hours and six hours returning. When we departed Boston on Aer Lingus, it was about 9:00 PM. Add five hours and the arrival time is 2:00 AM Boston time. Sounds right, doesn't it? But it is 7:00 AM Shannon time because they are five hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST). So where does the night go and how do you lose five hours?

We left Shannon in our rented mini-van and set a course for Galway City about an hour northwest with a stop for breakfast along the way. As my wife's family had always done when they traveled to Ireland, we found a hotel and slept for about three hours to try to find three of the five hours we lost. I know I didn't find them, but I tried.

Galway, located on the west coast, is the fifth largest city in Ireland. It is known for its beautiful architecture and commands some breathtaking views of Galway Bay.

Again, this was my first trip to Ireland and Ed, my wife's father, was anxious to show me around the city. He and his Mary had made many trips back to Drumshanbo to see the sights and visit her family. We toured the city and spent the night in Galway. This was our first night in Ireland.

Among the grandest structures in the city is Galway Cathedral. Note the use of white marble, granite and gold.

Tomorrow, we head North to Bundoran, also along the coast.

John, another interesting story about Ireland. I would have great time in Galway - I love architecture. Galway seems to be full of amazing old churches that look like masterpieces. Beautiful view of the bay.

Robert - I just know you will love it when you get there!

Clint - Scotland - another noble country! I certainly would like to visit there and maybe play a little golf. St. Andrews?

Elizabeth - Top of the morning to you! Thank you. On this trip, we only saw a fraction of the beauty of Ireland. Can't wait to go back again.

Andrea - That was my intent all along. Should I apply for a position with the Ireland Department of Tourism?

Roy - There are flowers to photograph in Ireland too! I can only imagine the photos you and Dolores would take. The camera we used was our first digital - an Olympus C-700 Ultra Zoom. This camera was one of the first to offer a 10X optical zoom and at 2.1 megapixels still takes a fair picture when everything is just right

John ~ Gorgeous stonework and granite ~ Galway Cathedral - must have been amazing to see in person ~ I watched the series "Pillars of the Earth" which was very interesting to see how the churches were built back then ~

Frank & Karen - The architecture of this church is beautiful, but it is not old. Constructio on this church actually began in 1958 and it was completed in 1965. Below are photos I did not use in the blog.

Frank & Karen - The quality of the granite work was so well done, but the marble floors and marble at the communion rail in the blog photos really caught my attention. And yes, that gate in the rail was solid gold. The cost to build this today is unimaginable.
