The Month of March ... Celebrating the Inner Irish in All of Us - Chapter 6
To whet your appetite and help you prepare to celebrate the upcoming MAJOR INTERNATIONAL HOLIDAY, St. Patrick's Day, I thought I would share a few photos and a wee bit of the story about a trip we made to Ireland. I will post a wee bit each day until St. Patty's day. Hope you will follow along.
Wee Bit No. 6 -The flight from Boston to Shannon is five hours and six hours returning. When we departed Boston on Aer Lingus, it was about 9:00 PM. Add five hours and the arrival time is 2:00 AM Boston time. Sounds right, doesn't it? But it is 7:00 AM Shannon time because they are five hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time (EST). So where does the night go and how do you lose five hours?
We left Shannon in our rented mini-van and set a course for Galway City about an hour northwest with a stop for breakfast along the way. As my wife's family had always done when they traveled to Ireland, we found a hotel and slept for about three hours to try to find three of the five hours we lost. I know I didn't find them, but I tried.
Galway, located on the west coast, is the fifth largest city in Ireland. It is known for its beautiful architecture and commands some breathtaking views of Galway Bay.
Again, this was my first trip to Ireland and Ed, my wife's father, was anxious to show me around the city. He and his Mary had made many trips back to Drumshanbo to see the sights and visit her family. We toured the city and spent the night in Galway. This was our first night in Ireland.
Among the grandest structures in the city is Galway Cathedral. Note the use of white marble, granite and gold.
Tomorrow, we head North to Bundoran, also along the coast.
