An Experiment in Above Ground Gardening

Above ground gardeningI had a few barrels on hand that I had no use for, and a friend suggested that I try cutting them in half for waist level gardening. I thought what the heck, I have nothing to lose. He cut them for me, and then last Sunday I built stands for them. I will see how they work and if it goes well, I may try to 'pretty" them up. But for now I just want to see.

I ended up with four planters, and I planted some lettuce and spinach last week. I have never planted anything this early, but the gardening store assured me that this would be perfect timing. So far we have had several days of hard rain, and so the seeds have had planty of water without me doing a thing, which is always nice.

Last year when I was at an Ace Hardware on Sweeten Creek Road in Asheville, and they had a beautiful pot that stood almost waist level. It was filled with a variety of colorful leaf lettuce and was so beautiful, I have wanted to try it since. So here is my chance.

I have the two in the front yard for salads. I planted about 5 varieties of lettuce in the same way that Ace did it. I added a row of spiniach down the center of each barrel. I can't wait until they start to pop up! The two in the back yard will be for small annual herbs I think. We'll see when it gets closer to planting.

I will keep you posted on how it goes.

Interesting idea!   I do hope you know what was in those before and not harmful chemicals.

I love my raised beds.  When you get older is harder to reach down.  I also think I get more per square foot than in the regular space.

Yes Rob, I made sure to know what was in the barrels and it was some kind of food liquid. Drilled holes on the bottom, filled with a layer of rock, then a bag of soil for vegitables.

Gwen, I too am getting older and knees not so good any longer. I am going to love the standing to pick greens routine. I use the French Intensive Method of planting where everything is closer, so this should work well. I will post later when stuff starts to grow.

Greetings from KW in Brevard! I'm so envious. I wish I was a gardener....but this gives me hope. I love raised beds. Easier to get to for sure. Last year I tried my hand a cherry tomatoes and got so-so results. But I so love having fresh herbs and lettuce.

Jerri keep us posted as things start to grow!

And, I am so glad you called it "soil" and not "dirt".  Dirt is what you sweep up off the kitchen floor!!!

Carol, I am sure hoping that this will give me an easier salads. We'll see. You should try something like this!

Bill and Cyndi, Yes the 'soil' I got is full of nutrients and hopefully will make it grow better.

I was able to verify that I placed enough holes in the bottom, as well as drainage rock. It was draining after all of the rain we had last week. I hope to see some shoots coming up soon.
