The other day I was walking with my girlfriend. We passed by a home that used to be owned by the man who ran the entire hospital system for our area. I commented to my girlfriend what I did when I was just 18 years old. I was barely out of high school and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. What I did know is that I wanted to be successful.

I wanted to have the means to take care of my family and have the respect of my friends and family. So even at the age of 18 I took action to get those things. I picked up the phone and I called the man who lived in that house. Now I didn’t know him, my family didn’t know him, in fact he had never heard my name before that day. When I got him on the phone I told him what I wanted.

I wanted to take him to lunch. When he asked why, I told him that I wanted to ask him how he became so successful. He smiled at that and accepted the lunch date. I took him to eat Chinese food, my favorite, and I picked his brain. I learned the things he had done to become successful and I took good notes. I didn’t just do this with one person. I did this with lots of people over the years.

I wanted to learn all I could about success. I wanted to learn all I could from people who had actually done it. I wanted all the information I could get that helped them to succeed. What are their secrets, what made them successful while others failed. Here are three ideas I would like you to take with you: Never be afraid to seek out others you can learn from.

This is something I was obviously already doing, but I found that this is a habit of people who are successful. So how are you reaching out to others? Be innovative, come up with ideas that are all your own. It is easy to copy someone else’s products or services, but in order to be truly successful you need to have your own things or your own way of doing things. How do people recognize your products and services and how do they stand out from the others in the market.

The harder you work, they luckier you get! Many people will tell you that rich people are lucky. Well one of the richest men I ever talked to said that he has found that the harder he works the luckier he gets. I have found that is very true. Work at it and don’t give up! I love the fact that you were very determined at a young age.  That doesn't happen that often.  I too knew I wanted to be successful at an early age and I knew what I wanted to do which helped.  Congratulations on your determination and motivation.  Have a great year!!
