Police Investigate Missing Real Estate Signs
Police in Kansas City, Mo., have retrieved piles of missing real estate signs from a real estate agent's home after several other real estate professionals in the area had complained that signs they used to direct buyers to their listings repeatedly had been stolen from the side of streets.

A rival agent had been accused of stealing the "pointer signs," which sit near or along the streets of sale properties that direct potential buyers to a listing.

Police found piles of pointer signs when investigating the complaints and interviewing the accused real estate professional. The sign owners will decide whether to press charges against the man.

The real estate professional accused of taking the signs says he considers the signs unsightly and a violation of his homeowners association's rules.

"I spend a lot of money on these," says George Medina about his real estate signs, which he says continually went missing. He says that if the man doesn't want to use the pointer signs he doesn't have to but he shouldn't stand in the way of other real estate agents who choose to market their homes using the signs.

In my city of Belleair Bluffs, the city has a signage rule that doesn't allow signs on any property without a permit. The permit allows 1 sign to be put in the front of a home. I haven't had a problem with a FOR SALE Sign in the yard, but have had my signs taken by the sheriffs department when doing open houses. Luckily there is a "spot" they put all of the signs taken and most agents know about it. It does make it complicated to market open houses without directional signs, but some days we win, some days we lose. I am interested in changing the sign ordinance in my area, but need to seek the proper venues to change it.

What are your thoughts? Is this "rival" agent correct to take the signs if citing the homeowners association rules? or is he being a bad sport?

In our area, you put out a directional sign you will be fined unless you put it off the right of way and on private property.
