Mourning the Death of Someone I Didn't Really Even Know

By
Industry Observer

His obituary in the local paper caught my eye - and though I didn't even really know him, I am sad to learn of his death.  And even sadder that I never got to know him better.  Amando Humberto Barzola Hidalgo was a regular vendor at Olympia Farmer's Market, always smiling as he offered tastes of his incomparable salsa.

We are not talking any ordinary salsa either, but one so addictively yummy that we usually had to stop weekly at his table to get another supply for chip dipping, taco topping, and even tasting just one more spoonful all by itself. And his garlic sauce made pretty much any dish scrumptious!

Last summer we knew he was ill, but never realized it was a life threatening kind of thing - until reading that he had passed away.  And reading more about his amazing life,  I am filled with regret that I never got to know him better.  Growing up in Ecuador & Columbia, his university studies included biology, ecological agriculture, & sustainable food systems.   His work in organic farming, solar box cooking, seed saving and volunteer involvement spanned locations from Alaska to Central America.

There will be a Celebration of Life at Farmer's Market on Monday, April 11th at 11 AM - so I will get a chance to pay tribute to this man I wish I had gotten to really know.

I will miss you Amando Hidalgo - rest in peace!

How terribly sad.  I understand your grief.  I've had that happen many times before....hear of a death of someone I don't know at all and have it bother me all day long.  You knew this man, no matter how briefly, and it will be hard for you to return to the market and not have him there.

Thanks Sharon - I will really miss seeing him in the market, but also just regret that I never got to really know him - he had such an amazing life I would've loved to hear his stories.  As his illness progressed he did have another person work with him and they will continue the salsa stand - so salsa continues; it just won't be quite the same without him :(

I’ve also sometimes had those situations where someone died that I only knew by actions rather than by name.
