His obituary in the local paper caught my eye - and though I didn't even really know him, I am sad to learn of his death. And even sadder that I never got to know him better. Amando Humberto Barzola Hidalgo was a regular vendor at Olympia Farmer's Market, always smiling as he offered tastes of his incomparable salsa.
We are not talking any ordinary salsa either, but one so addictively yummy that we usually had to stop weekly at his table to get another supply for chip dipping, taco topping, and even tasting just one more spoonful all by itself. And his garlic sauce made pretty much any dish scrumptious!
Last summer we knew he was ill, but never realized it was a life threatening kind of thing - until reading that he had passed away. And reading more about his amazing life, I am filled with regret that I never got to know him better. Growing up in Ecuador & Columbia, his university studies included biology, ecological agriculture, & sustainable food systems. His work in organic farming, solar box cooking, seed saving and volunteer involvement spanned locations from Alaska to Central America.
There will be a Celebration of Life at Farmer's Market on Monday, April 11th at 11 AM - so I will get a chance to pay tribute to this man I wish I had gotten to really know.
I will miss you Amando Hidalgo - rest in peace!
