Saline, Michigan Toyota Plant and The Housing Market

Toyota Solara In July of 2005, Toyota won a long, hard fought battle to build a research and development facility in York Township. York Township is in the Saline Area School District and also parts of Milan School District.

The battle was long due to a developer wanting to purchase the land and build more houses on it. However, the state of Michigan and yes, most of us in Real Estate also wanted to see the facility come here to off set some of the job losses in the state. Governor Jennifer Granholm fought hard to see the Toyota Research and Development Facility come to Michigan instead of Kentucky.

A package of about 38.9 million dollars in tax incentive was put together and Toyota bought the 690 acres in York Township. As a resident of Saline, many of the sellers were longing to see more people move into this area, to help with the sale of their homes and decrease some of the inventory.

On September 20, the Saline Chamber of Commerce sponsored an event at Stonebridge County Club and Bruce Brownlee, Sr. Executive of Administrator for external affairs for Toyota, spoke at the event. "It's not like we're bringing in a whole new group of people to the area. Most are already here", he said. There are currently 600 employees already located here at the temporary facility in Ann Arbor. Many of those have already bought homes in our area. We have sold to several Toyota employees that have relocated here the last couple of years.

Over 100 people turned out to hear Mr. Brownlee speak and hopes were soon dashed by the Realtors in attendance as they heard him say, "Toyota's move into Saline in York Township would not solve the housing problems that so many were looking for."

At one time, it was reported that the average weekly salary was expected to be close to 3000.00. Toyota Technical Center, or TCC LLC as we are fond of calling it was established in 1977 and is located in Ann Arbor. They have been responsible for developing and engineering the Toyota cars built in the U.S. Some of those cars include the Sienna, Camry, Solara and the Avalon. Toyota Camry

I am still excited Toyota is developing the land in York Township and I believe that the long term effect will be positive for the State of Michigan and the Saline area. Just not right away, like so many of us had hoped for.

Missy, This is great news for York Township and Saline area. Let us know if this news changes the real estate market in your area.

Missy - I think this is very good. After month after month, for what seems too long, Michigan has been pummeled with bad news. It may take time to come to fruitation but there is hope for a better tomorrow.

Missy - Great news for Ann Arbor and Saline! I love how you put these two together and have thought about the same for the Indianapolis area with the new airport, Purdue Research Center and Rolls Royce adding new jobs for their government contract. Thanks for the idea!

I must say Missy, this is a perfect example of a GREAT localism post.

Missy, any new business for Michigan is great news. Sometimes the progress is slow, but as long as your area is seeing growth in new business and residents that's a good thing.

new is a great word - new employment and new dollars is always a great thing

Missy--Though it may not be as expected, atleast Toyota still plans to build. New businesses often bring other new businesses. Hope it is a trend. :)

I believe it always takes time for a good pie to settle...and the same for any new business.

John, any new business is welcome in Mi, but our legistatures raised the state income tax last night. Unbelievable, huh ?

I think that it is great that you have posted on this.

I have watched this long before the land was sold and I am glad that they have came to the A2 area and Michigan. I wish them the best and will do what I can to support our neighbors that are a part of the Toyota family.

It has to help the housing market. All those jobs means that people already there can keep their houses, not add them to the inventory. Good for you!

Missy, my husband works for our local Toyota plant. It brought over 1,000 GOOD PAYING jobs to an area that had a good workforce and not enough businesses recognizing that. Toyota has been GREAT for our community. They get involved in all areas, and when they see a need they try to fill it. They've done so much for our schools and emergency workers. Even if it weren't for the positive changes they've made in my own family, I would still be thankful they're here. I think you'll be VERY pleased to have them.

Sarah, that's fantastic. We are very happy they are building a huge building in York Township. It is a gorgeous piece of property and only about 2 miles from my house in Saline. We have sold several homes to Toyota people the last several years. I wish I could sell more to them. They don't work relo here, which is good so it is word of mouth. After the first one they have all been referred, except for one that bought one of my listings.

Joe, you're absolutely right, even if more don't come in the immediate future, the ones here are not moving to increase our inventory. Hadn't thought of it like that.

Missy-I think any type of commerce is helpful and maybe it will help to stimulate your local economy.
