THREE MILE ISLAND - Prayers for Japan

THREE MILE ISLAND - Prayers for Japan.

I was one of the evacuees in 1979 when Three Mile Island (TMI) had a core meltdown.  I was a Junior in High School and remember feeling very insecure.  We left our home, our belongings, and "fled" to a safe haven (Altoona, PA).  Now my heart goes out to the people of Japan, not only have they endured a tremendous earthquake & a tsunami they have to deal with a nuclear plant crisis.  I hope that today our thoughts and prayers (and financial support) are with the multitudes of people that have been affected.

Joy, what a moving post.  It is very different to actually have had an experience of being evacuated than the rest of us just seeing it on the news.  Thank you for this reminder that it is real people being affected.  Our prayers are with the Japanese people.

Your post does make us realize how fortunate we are here in this country too Joy. I know after Hurricane Andrew in Homestead, FL pictures and news film couldn't really show the devastation or what so many were going through. Now every time I see the mass devastation in Japan and know that as overwhelming as it looks we realize its so much more. Thank you for thinking and reminding us. We are praying for all of Japan.

I was in junior high when it happened and left home alone for the week-end on our family farm-(about 40 miles NW of TMI), with my younger brother.

When the situation happened, my mother called and instructed my brother and I to take water and food and stay in our "cold cellar" at least for a few days until my parents could return or send help.

After about 45 minutes in the cold and dark, we decided to take our chances with the radiation instead...............

Joy, I guess you would have a better understanding for those in Japan. We are praying for them and thanks for the reminder.

Joy, I too was in the "zone". Our cat was out for 2 days... poor thing probably only lived another 8 lives. I was a few years older and I remember the wind was mostly in our favor for most of the alert days. The thing I remember most was just seeing The China Syndrome in the theatres just the week before it happened. I couldn't help wondering if it was a movie prank to sell more tix. I guess even Hollywood isn't that low. I also have a cousin who lives in Tokyo, he doesn't seem too concerned about it all. That is something I don't understand. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, it  was a memory I wish I didn't have.

Joy, I actually grew up in Middletown and I was in junior high when everything happened with TMI.  Kids started being called to the office in the morning but it wasn't until after lunch until my mother came to get my brothers and I.  Until that point, none of us in school had any idea what was happening.  My father stayed at work and my mother didn't have a driver's license (still doesn't - how crazy is that?), so my grandmother picked us up.  Like you, our family is from Hollidaysburg/Altoona so that's where we went for the next month or so.  It seems so long ago but the events in Japan makes us realize how lucky we were.  Our prayers are definitely with them.

Joy,

I, too, remember Three Mile Island, however I lived in western PA so we were not directly affected like your family.  Thanks for the reminder to remember the people of Japan.
