Morning People vs Late Nite People? - a girl wants to know

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Home Team

Early Person

I  woke up this morning at 6AM just like always.  Not because of any Thanksgiving preparations, just because.  Because I always wake up at 6AM.  In fact, I'm usually in the office by 7:30.  I'm known as a "morning person".   I started thinking about this whole phenomenon at a closing yesterday.  The young buyer seemed distracted.  Finally the closing attorney asked her if she was feeling ok.  She said, "I'm fine but I'm exhausted.  I had to be at work at 7AM this morning".   I tried not to snicker or make eye contact with the attorney. I know he is is often at work by 6:30AM.  But it really did get me thinking....why are some people "morning people" and why are some people "late night people".  And why do some people require 8 hours and others can cruise with just 5-6?   Besides being a morning person, I need, at the very least, 8 hours of sleep.  Plus I'm a great napper!   I take at least a 2 hour nap every weekend!  And Thanksgiving is a great nap day!

The whole sleep thing is certainly intriguing.  I don't think it's hereditary. Or based on gender or nationality.  I really don't know but I still wonder??  And is one way better?  Do morning people or late nite people  make the best realtors?  Mortgage Officers?  Stagers? Presidents?  hmmmmm    zzzzzzzzzzzzz

(Whew Eric I was beginning to think it was a J thing!)

I wish I could get by with that little sleep.  I keep thinking I could get more done.  It's 9PM and I'm struggling to stay awake.

I truly can't remember when I last got 10 hours of sleep...maybe when I was in high school.  But Jay is right I do need at least  7-8 hours to feel good.  He can get away with 4 sometimes...

Hey Linda.

I used to a night owl and now am somewhat of both.  While I haven't fine tuned the art of needing minimal hours of sleep like the Churchill's & Lincoln's of yesteryear, I do think productivity in this business is timing.  Your schedule has to be flexible enough to reach both the morning consumer and the evening consumer.  So, ideally, don't go to sleep and you will own the business :-)

I work both ends, I am up early and to bed late or should I say early in the morning 1am-2am, so 6 hours a night maybe of sleep.

I work both ends of the day.  If I had to choose one or the other it would be night.  My mind really starts working later in the day.

Blogging between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. lets you know I'm a morning person. Whether it's a work day or on vacation, I'm awake before the sun comes up. Most productive time.

Like to many of us, I'm married to the opposite. Makes it hard to find time when we can both talk seriously about things (like financial planning) - has to be in the middle of the day, which means weekends, if I'm not showing property.

I am traditionally a morning person.  I would love to come to work by 6am and go home at 2pm.  I am usually in bed between 9-10pm each night.  Try as I may to sleep in on the weekends, the latest I can stay in bed is 7-730.  Naps are a wonderful thing!  Great topic for Thanksgiving!  After dinner, I wanted to take a nap in the worst way....

"The Lovely Linda"

Hi there. I'm up before the sun! I like watching the sunrise. It brings me closer to God...:0)

In my younger days sleep was elusive, simply put I did not have time for it. Two jobs, three children (one of them was BB) a house to clean, meals to cook, errands to run...Blah, blah!

I found that sleeping was a waste of my time. :0) It was one of those "okay I can sleep when I am dead"...LOL!

Now, I am like you. I sleep well, I am up early and do try not to stay up to late. Why? I get cranky now when I am deprived of my sleep! Must be that aging thing...:0)

I used to be a late night person until I got a dog. Now Sundance routinely has me awake by 6:30. Still, I seem to do most of my best work in the late afternoon and early evening. Now the challenge is shutting down the computer and turning off the television by midnight so I can get a good night's sleep!

i've always been a morning person-and being at work by 7a-730a gives me all the reason i need to avoid evening appointments (do you really want me at my worst when i've been working for 12 hours?  wouldn't you rather meet over coffee or lunch?) =)

Monika - I really envey someone that can get by with 4 hours of sleep.  I would be a zombie.

Jason - That's what I keep thinking!!!   Time is money!

Brian - Yes, it appears that lenders sleep less than realtors. <G>

Leo - 6 hours sounds perfect, unfortunately something in my brain requires more.

George - When I get up in the morning is when I normally read your new posts!

Kristal - Later in the day my brain shuts down but the morning is when I'm  at my peak.

Sharon - I knew how you were going to answer.  I know we are often here at the same time.

Kerry - I'd love that schedule too.  Unfortunately I don't think the customers would like it.  :-(

TLW - I need all the help I can get getting closer to God and if getting up early does it so be it!   and ...ahhhh the age thing.  Yep, we do get cranky at our age. Although I have no idea how old you are!

John - Sundance gets up with the sun, huh?

Leigh - I've used that line many times.  I'd much rather meet someone before work than after.

I am a morning person, wish all my clients were too.  I would prefer to have everyone moving by 7, no traffic, no one in my way.  I could (and do) get so much more done in the morning.  The supermarkets are empty, there are not any lines, it's great to be first at the dentist, providing your dentist is a morning person you can just keep your day in order and on a much better schedule.

As you know we share the morning personality. I always have even as a teen. Weekends my friends warned me if I called before 10 a.m. our friendship was over. So way before computers, I used that time to form a reading addiction.

I missed this one one last week!

Carole I can relate to you referring out the 9am customer. LOL

I am a true blooded 150% Night Owl. Always have been.

If I get to sleep before 1 am I consider that I have going to bed early.

Ginger

Wish it were different, because it is more convenient to be an early bird for sure.

It is genetic. Your body has a natural inturnal rhythem that tells you when to be awake and when to be sleepy. I am a night owl. If I didn't have school, horses (I live on a farm), and other commitments I would be more than happy to sleep from 3 am to 11am every day. Anyway, if you Google it there is stuff all over the internet about these natural rhythems and their genetic causes. Just Google the words night owl morning. I found more than I ever wanted to know while looking for ways to get myself out of bed before noon.
