Photo Show-Adopt a Dog. Rescue Dogs at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter

Our adopted rescue dogs: Eleanor Rigby and Penny Lane.

If you are new to dog ownership, do your homework and choose the right type of dog for your lifestyle, handling experience and energy level.

To be on their best behavior, dogs need lots of exercise. Walks also train them to your leadership and they will be more obedient than dogs that just run around the backyard.

If this is your first dog, get an easy breed. If you are a couch potato, don't get a hunting breed or high energy dog. It is not fair to them. One of the reasons that animals end up in shelters is because of poor ownership habits and incorrect owner expectations, not bad dog habits.

Try to find the "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Milan on your cable TV. He's great....and can usually be found on the National Geographic Channel. Here's his web site link:http://www.cesarsway.com/

 OK, go save a dog!

our pound puppy Eleanor Rigby  If you live in Fairfax County Virginia and you are thinking about getting a cat or dog, please consider adoption.

Our last three dogs have been adopted canines and they are awesome.

Fairfax County animal shelter
Visit the Fairfax County shelter off West Ox Road near Fair Oaks mall on a regular basis and you will find the right pet for you... it might not happen in one visit.

our pound puppy Penny LaneSome of the animals you will find there are too abused for a new pet owner or one with children to handle. Usually you can spot these animals right away.

Eleanor Rigby and Penny Lane her mother
One test I use before I ask the aides to let me meet the dog, is to simply see if the animal will come up to the front of its pen to meet me with a wagging tail.

Fairfax County animal shelter hours of operationIf so, that is a very good first sign. Many dogs will stay huddled in a corner or stare indifferently or agressively...not a good sign for a successful adoption...sadly some animals have become too psychotic for most of us to handle.

This is a very good adopted dog-Penny Lane
The last two dogs we got and still have, were very neurotic from abuse, but we took them on since we are pretty experienced dog people.

Eleanor RigbyIt took one of them a year to trust us, but they are now both outstanding and entertaining pets. If you take your time and use common sense, you can get a great pet...REALLY CHEAP!

It is very affordable to adopt a pet in Fairfax County. I have seen some breeds there with dogs of good temperment that would easily cost you $700 if you purchased them from a breeder

  • Dogs- $40.00
  • Cats- $30.00
  • Rabbits/ferrets- $15.00
  • Reptiles/small birds- $10.00
  • Other (hamsters,gerbils)- $5.00
  • Equine/bovine- $200.00
  • Livestock- $20.00
  • Large birds- $100.00

  • who can resist Penny? No one.

You must pay to neuter any cat or dog you adopt...again ...a very reasonable expense.

  • Virginia State Law mandates that all dogs and cats adopted from a shelter must be spayed/neutered.
  • You are also responsible for paying 100 percent of the cost for spaying/neutering dogs and cats adopted from the shelter.
  • A deposit for surgery is taken at the time of adoption, and the balance is paid directly to the veterinarian when the pet is picked up after surgery.

Steve, you have adorable dogs. What a wonderful endorsement for the Fairfax County Shelter. We are just a couple of years away from getting a canine playmate, but we will do the same thing at our local facility.

What a great post!  We've been adopting and fostering dogs for more than 25 years.  While at times it is frustrating it is NEVER unrewarding.  I love the names Eleanor Rigby and Penny Lane. Really good video and thanks for starting my day with a smile.

Steve...great start to this post.  I used to own a Pet Shop and seen many first time pet powners that didn't have a clue what they were in for.

Hello Steve, Animal Shelters are always a great place to get pets for your homes. WE have adopted several ourselves over the years. We now have three in our home. It great to see that you are promoting Fairfax County Shelter.  Keep up the good work.

Steve, Our current dog is an adoptee via a pound (although indirect chain for us...two other people had Bunny from the pound to us), and she's been a blast to add to the cat mix.

Steve, you know this is an issue very near and dear to my heart, I usually do not political on AR, but I have to say I am a full supporter of capitol punishment for animal abusers. Sickens me to no end, hell I'd volunteer to pull the trigger and sleep like a baby that very same night.....

Ellie, It took many visits to the Fairfax animal shelter before I found a dog that was right since we had young children then and could not take a chance. Our next set of dogs was easier because my children are young adults and are more dog savvy now...so we took on a tougher challenge. They are great now although the big one is still very nervous.

Mona, so many people are taking a chance on rehabilitating dogs now. 20 years ago everyone would just go to a pet store or breeder.Good news but still too many dogs are put down.

Penny is the little dog and is Ellie's mother despite being half the size. Penny is still the boss, although Ellie tests her. Penny goes low...grabs Ellie's ankles and takes her down.

We think Penny is part Skye terrier and Ellie is mostly Wheaton terrior. Go figure.

Bill, it is a shame. Some folks give more thought to buying a pair of shoes than they do for a pet. Hey...that's OK if you buy goldfish.

Jerry, 3 dogs? Man you make me want to go get another!

My wife and I are a real estate team working together almost constantly and these dogs provide so much stress relief after a long tough day of fixing problem transactions...both of us can feel the tenseness bleed off when they greet us.

Dogs help reduce alcohol consumption.

Gerry, Thankfully most folks are not abusers, they just do not know how to handle animals. They treat them as people and the dogs especially get out of control since they will try to BE the leader in the absence of training. That is where most of the dogs in our shelters come from. Folks get puppies...don't know how to train them...have no patience...work long hours and the dogs become uncontrollable.

The dogs we have now were physically abused though. The little dog has a broken back-end and she "pogos" on 2 legs much of the time...hopping. Must have been kicked or beaten. She is fast though...amazing. She should be afraid or agressive but she is just great. Her daughter, the big one Ellie is nervous as a deer on ice around any one but us. She has gotten much better but it took a year at least to get her so she wouldn't freak at a stranger and hide for hours.

Thanks for taking a chance on rescue dogs. Helps them... helps us.

Man I want another one

Patricia you verb slinger and life scene capture-er. Thanks for the compliments but as most folks who work with rescue dogs will tell you, they do more for us than we do for them. I can never be a dogless person....They just make our day better.

Nothing like an old wife, an old dog and ready money :-)

Bless you for adopting dogs!  Both of my dogs were adopted -- my oldest was a foster dog, and I kept her because she was just so smart and loving, although very fearful.  I gave her lots of love, and her fears melted away.  Great post.

Roberta,

I AM blessed by our dogs. They are serotonin, melatonin and anti-depressants on 4 furry feet plus quite magnificent flourishing, flag waving tails.
