Earth Day Weekend in Hawi, Big Island Hawaii

This year we have Earth Day falling the same week as Easter, which has made for a busy time in our little rural community of Kohala on the Big Island.  A newer tradition is to celebrate Earth Day with the Trash Bash in downtown Hawi.  Usually it includes both a Saturday night Art Show (where all the entries must be made of trash or recycled materials) and a Sunday morning Fashion Show (again with all the costumes of what would usually be considered trash).

Besides the art, there is live music and heavy pupu's, not to mention generous samples of fudge made on premises at the Coffee Mill and sold upstairs at the Kava Bar (where tourists and locals gather daily for coffee, wholesome breakfast and lunch goodies, and Tropical Dreams Ice Cream).

Earth Day stretches to Earth Month this year with another event to be held a week from today, May 1st, when the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring what they hope will become an annual Grand Green Homes Tour.

For a $20 ticket, you can choose to see the four homes in either Kailua Kona, Waimea, or here in North Kohala (for the really committed, you can buy additional tickets and travel to more than one town).

While none of the homes featured on the tour are for sale, if you are inspired by the LEED-certified homes or environmentally friendly designs and materials you see on the tour, there are plenty of green properties to be found in the real estate for sale in West and North Hawaii.

Tickets for the Grand Green Homes Tour are available at the Coffee Mill in Hawi, where the Trash Bash Art continues on display throughout the coming week.

A hui hou,

Beth
