Shelton CT Early Voter Registration May 19 for Shelton High School Students

During May of every year, the Shelton CT Registrar of Voters Office performs an onsite voter registration and information session at Shelton High School for the Junior and Senior classes

This year the Registrar's office will be at Shelton High School Thursday, May 19, 2011.

The program works in tandem with the Social Studies Civic curriculum educating students on the voting process.

Students are shown a sample ballot and given a full explanation of the voting process.

What age do the students need to be to register?  They must be 17 years of age or older and must turn 18 on or before election day, which this years falls on November 8, 2011.

What other qualifications are there?  The student must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of a Connecticut town. Students should also have a valid ID, (CT driver's license, birth certificate, or social security card)

IMPORTANT: Students may vote in primaries if they are 17 years of age provided they will turn 18 on or before election day.

Connecticut passed a law, following the lead of many other states, which lowered the voting age to 17 in primaries. The reason for this is to increase voter participation among the younger demographic thereby creating life-long voters.  Learning a good habit at a younger age typically makes it a lifelong habit.

Remember: Voting is a constitutional right.....  the right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.

For more information contact the Shelton CT Registrar of Voters office.

Barbara-

Failing or refusing to understand the issues and then voting is an oft overlooked right that too many neglect. Helping in this education effort is great. Thanks.

Wayne -- Very well said.  Voters should understand the issues and the process before casting any vote.

Barbara this is a great way to encourage our young voters to vote.  Voting is one of the most special rights that we have, and it is sad to say that many do not use that right.

Barbara, it's wonderful to get them early, but more important that understand the power they can have if they do vote. Turnouts in elections are so low but so many complain after that they do not like the elected officials.

George -- Indeed, may do not use their right, but many also use it haphazardly.... they just vote to vote not knowing the candidate or the issues.

Ed -- You can't complain if you don't vote.

Brian -- I'm glad to see programs like this which not only promote voting but also educate the new voter in the process.
