Red Hook NY Dog Show

For years I have gone by this house in the village of Red Hook.  The house was built in 1776 and is rather stunning.  Something that also draws my attention to the property is the Dog Show held on the grounds several times per year.

Well, yesterday I saw the sign for the show and  decided I was going in.  So I did, and I met some great dogs as well as some wonderful people.

Dog owners came from all over to show the dogs.  As I understand it this is called a match, the purpose of which is to get the dogs used to competing.   This means the owner will go to many of these shows throughout the year getting the dogs ready for competition in the American Kennel Association competitions and from there who knows?, maybe the Westminister Dog Show.  I met one lady who said her sister was successful in getting her dog all the way to the Westminster show.

So here are a few shots from the day's activity.

Meet Cherry the four month old Great Dane

Pooppee the mature Great Dane

Nelson the Rottweiler

Mungo the Bull Dog

The photographs are really good. It appears the event had a fairly large turnout at the time you were there.

That is so charming, Jennifer- both the house and the "event".  I like seeing people with similar interests get involved with one another that way.  After seeing the movie "Best in Show" it's hard for me to watch the big televised dog shows without laughing a little- a show like the one you visited looks like more fun!  The great dane is gorgeous.  Do you think that my bulldog, Oliver Pudge, would be elimimated for viciously attacking the leash every time I put it on him?  A gentle soul, he really thinks that the leash is his enemy.

It looks like it was perfect weather and relaxed atmosphere for you, the dog owners, and the dogs. Nothing like Westminister Dog Show they hope to attend.

I love dogs, we have four. They drive me crazy but they don't talk back and I don't have to send them to college

Derrick - The turn out was not as big as usual, I promised to post the schedule for each event next year.

Laurie - I too love bull dogs, I love the wrinkled face, my problem is my house is a pet free zoo due to allergy.

Charlie -This area has lots of historic homes for which I am grateful.

Rosario - It was a lovely day and at the end everyone enjoyed wine and cheese on the beautiful back porch.

Missy - You don't have to send them to college but some how I don't think you escape the expense, how about feeding them and the vet bills? LOL

Robert - I did not think about that, but now that you pointed it out is sure was a year of declaration.

Hello Jennifer,
I am glad you stopped and checked out the dog show.  Beautiful dogs and I know you enjoyed your visit.  I understand the people who take their dogs to these competitions are totally committed to the showing of their dogs.  As I am sure one would have to be.  Interesting.

Cynthia - It takes commitment if their aim is to get into one of the big shows.  I think the owners also like to get together and talk shop.

Jennifer, I have seen dog shows on TV, but have never been to a live one.  I don't know if I could sit there while they judge all those dogs, but I am glad that you enjoyed it.

Marchel -It was a fun afternoon. I am glad we have so many older homes in this area and the history behind many of them is oh so interesting.

George - I too watch it on TV, my home is a pet free zone due to allergy; however I had passed this show many times and I finally decided to stop by.  The dog owners are really passionate about their pets.  It was a pleasure meeting both owners and pets.

Ray - I am a visual person, I get inspired by the things around me and that is one reason for all the photos.

Ray -So how did your Boxer do in the competition?  It does take dedication to attend all the competitions.
