An ocean of agents and why some are more successful than others

I stumbled across this photo tonight after having a conversation with an agent that I have much respect for and who happens to be my competition.

We’re both passionate about proving outstanding customer service.  We’re both energetic, have high ethical standards, and believe in surrounding ourselves with positive people.  We’re self motivated, we advertise, blog, make videos, communicate effectively with our clients and we’re friends who can hold each other accountable.

Tonight we talked about why some agents are more successful than others.  We both agreed successful agents regardless of what firm they worked for exhibit and possess the following:

Positive and creative thinking, time management skills, communications skills, proper pricing and presentation of listings, they volunteer and give back to the community, put their clients needs first, are not afraid of saying no to unrealistic demands of a client, are diligent in prospecting, are not afraid to ask for letters of recommendations, practice and sharpen their presentation materials, and are continually seeking knowledge to better serve their clients.

Notice how we never said a successful agent was boastful, drove a nice car, lived in a big house, and had a designated parking space.  Yet there is a perception by some that this IS what makes an agent successful.

It’s the skills you possess NOT your possessions that make you successful.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for posting. You're so right, success is not measured by possessions.

Great comments! Could not be more true. My father used to say prospecting is just like shaving, the minute you quit either one. You will become a bum.

Thank you Karen.

Margo - I wonder why some believe and measure their success & self worth by material possessions?

Mark - I love the quote and would like to borrow it sometime.

Mary, Great post!  Food for thought, it is amazing, one of the most successful agent in our area is one that you would never know it to look at them.  They don't drive a flashy or wear flashy clothing.  They drive a nice car and wear professional attire, but they aren't flashy!

Thank you Tony.  My dad was a multi-million dollar producer for Better Homes and Gardens in the 80's.  He was new to the area, drove a beat up old pickup truck and was the top Listing agent in less than a month.  Many agents scratched their heads and couldn't understand why he was so successful.  He later told me that he worked while others sat in their big office with designated parking space.  I'm so glad he shared that story with me.

Love that story about your dad. I think being authentic and caring more about your clients than your "stuff" is the key. Thanks for sharing.
