Surprise AZ Harvest in full swing Watermelon Anyone?
Watermelon Harvest is in full swing in Surprise AZ within a half mile of Sun City Grand, 1 mile from Sun City West and all across the south side of the metro Phoenix area. This is quite a site with tractors and trucks pulling double pup trailers loaded with watermelon. I had no idea until I moved to Sun City Grand that they grew all of these fruit and vegetables in the desert.
The tucks and tractors are rolling in every direction as when the fruit is ripe it must be picked and rushed to market. This field happens to be about 1/2 mile from my home in Sun City Grand Surprise AZ. There is a roadside produce stand at the building where they take these watermelon to load them on trucks to go to market. I stopped by a couple of days ago and purchased a watermelon, sweet corn, cantaloupe and onions, I don't know why but they always seem to taste better from the roadside stands. That may be just a little of that psychological state of mind!
I was amazed at the loads of watermelon on all the trailers and they was only on the 1st 1/4th of the field. Keep in mind when I took these photos it was 100 degrees already and forecast for 112 degrees. This would not be a job I would like to do but as they say someone has to do it. Most fruit and vegetables are picked by machine but there are some that must be picked by hand and watermelon happens to be one of those hand pick fruit. The next time you bite into one of those succulent fruit think of how hard these people work to get it to you as the end user. I paid 2.00 for a medium size seedless watermelon, 1.00 for a cantaloupe and 12 ears of sweet corn for 5.00. I left that stand feeling like I hit the jackpot and oh how tasty and enjoyable. Now if that doesn't make you want some watermelon what will. Watermelon Anyone?
