Now this is a gross idea that is not going anywhere! (warning: possible high yuck factor)

We have all seen the adds on TV for the dishwasher soaps that promise to leave your crystal wine glasses just as spotless---as a Dalmatian is spotted.

On a recent inspection I found a dishwasher drain installation that is guaranteed to keep that crystal even MORE spotted than a Dalmatian.  Take a look at the picture below and you should be able to see how when water drains from the left basin it can run right INTO the drain from the dishwasher.

Improper dishwasher drain connection

Most people like to think of their dishwasher as a relatively sanitary environment and risking dirty water flowing back  into the washer is not considered a good idea.  Those of you grossed out by the idea of a Gum Wall might even be a little disgusted by this idea as well.  The best spot-free detergents in the world are not going to help with this insult.  This dishwasher drain should be connected to a proper countertop air-gap device or to a Johnson-T air gap device ----and then to a proper drain location.

Remember that chicken or fish you gutted in the sink last week?

Or when the kids gave fluffy a bath?

Hopefully nobody washed out diapers in the sink---oh yeah, I forgot---nobody washes diapers at home any more.

Yes even that stuff---or worse---might find its way into the dishwasher.  The kitchen sink gets used for all kinds of things---even bad contests.
Well the contest itself wasn't really so bad

Makes you want to go lick the Gum Wall doesn't it?

Very interesting... and common fault. I see this quite often around here too, but I must say that the double sink adds an interesting twist. I hope you didn't drink from the glasses while you were inspecting that house.

I've always wondered how this was all done...but, I live in a very old house and don't have a garbage disposal (empty food into the garbage bag before rinsing) and my dishwasher is portable so I connect the water hose to my faucet and plug it in to the wall.  My guess is that whatever is in my dishwasher comes out into my sink...but again, the plates have to be scraped before going into the dishwasher...

Great post and pics.  Too bad that the existing homeowner had to deal with that issue.  At least the new owner will be able to have that resolved.  Can't imagine reversing the water flow.  Yuk!!

Mike you are welcome---I am always good at "yuck":)

Jim, you are welcome

Vickie, like I have told others---it is not likely you will find anything this bad

Paul, thanks

Cynthia, I know---can't help it :)

Steven, nope---the house was empty

Carolyn, yes---portable dishwashers are not going to have this problem

Jan, in this case the washer is ancient and replacement will cure two issues at one time.

No garbage disposal in this unit?  Here is another YUCK! factor.  Images  Imagine those places where an over the range vent is not required to vent to the outside.  Now imagine someone that likes to fry A LOT!  Where does all of that grease go to?  Not just the spatter, but the grease that is "vaporized."

It is supposed to be sucked into the OTR hood/vent and then filtered by a grease/charcoal filter.  However, unless you clean that once a month it quickly becomes useless.  When is the last time you cleaned your OTR hood filter?

Now back to that "vaporized" grease.  Where did it go if not filtered or exhausted to the outside?  Try looking at the top of your kitchen cabinets.

Yum!

Robert---yes the tops of cabinets can get pretty gross with grease for sure

Lyn---don't know the word "urpy" but it sure sounds accurate :)

YUKKKKKKKKKKKK.  But we see it all of the time.  No high loop and no air gap.  I keep a local plumber busy installing them for my clients.  About 50% of the inspections fail this test.  Double yuk on the gum wall.

It "looked" good - IF you didn't know the right way it was to be done! Knowing that was a gum wall is gross!

Seems alot of 'flippers' install dishwatshers without airgaps too- just not the right way to do things.
