The city of Gainesville turned 185 on Thursday, and the occasion was marked with balloons, cupcakes and plenty of guests. Gainesville city employees, known Thursday evening as the City Celebration Singers had some fun on stage during the balloon drop at the 185th Gainesville birthday celebration.

During the birthday bash at the Georgia Mountains Center, 185 people were recognized for their contributions to the community. The list of honorees ranged from small-business owners and city employees to outstanding students, teachers and volunteers and most of the honorees have chosen to stay out of the limelight.

"They were chosen because they did something to make Gainesville an even better place to live," Mayor Bob Hamrick said.
