July Fourth

In recognition of July 4th, a soda company has decided to put the Pledge of Allegiance on the side of its bottle. Unfortunately they left out the words “under God” in the oath of loyalty. Did they forget? Was it a typo? NO! They didn’t want to “offend” anybody…Really? Well let’s talk about this for a minute, because this seems to have been an ongoing pursuit by American citizens for a long time.

I am just a normal, average American, I was raised Catholic but I don’t practice exclusively. I believe in God but I don’t attend church regularly and I definitely do not preach, nor do I force God on those around me. Though, to many, this is about forcing God on those who don’t believe, to me it is a complete act of absurdity. To me, this isn’t about God, Buddha, Satin or whoever else you decide to put your faith in…this is about changing history….which is impossible.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy in 1892, it was then formerly adopted into Congress in 1942 and in 1954 the words “under God” were added. Now, first and foremost, who gives anybody the right to change this historic pledge to our flag? Well, I guess the only people that can do that are Congress, but even then why would they do it? In order not to offend anybody? I should hope not.

Christians, people who believe in God, make up approximately 75% of our nation. Many of those say that their religion and God are of paramount importance in their lives. Out of the other 25% of the people who make up America, 5.5% are of other religious beliefs (such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam) and about 15% have no religious beliefs at all.

So, who exactly is this soda company trying NOT to offend? The 75% of Americans who believe in God, or the 25% who don’t? What has this world come to?
