Western North Carolina attracts a high number of out of state buyers who can't wait to move here. I like to think I will never take the magnificence of where I live for granted, but the buyer's eagerness to locate themselves and their families here keeps it all fresh in my mind to always be thankful for my surroundings.
Once the dog family is fed and walked, I am aware every morning of the blissful serenity of the mountains, woods and birds. As I sit here typing I can hear crows cawing, squirrels chattering, birds singing, our creeks gurgling and the wind rustling in the leaves. I often take early morning walks down my road and am delighted by the wildflowers, wild turkeys, ferns, mushrooms, trees and views. All of it makes me happy - from the little dandelion to the long range views.
If I needed to run into town I know that no high volume of noisy traffic will impede my travels and my entire route will be bordered by Blue Ridge mountain scenery. Within two minutes I can be on the Blue Ridge Parkway and within 25 minutes I can be in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
If those backyard treasures aren't enough to be thankful for, the National Forests of Pisgah, Cherokee and Nantahala are also close at hand. There's also a wonderful choice of lakes from small to huge to enjoy. We have Lake Junaluska and Lake Logan in Waynesville, Cedar Cliff, Bear Lake and Lake Glenville in Jackson County, Nantahala Lake in Franklin and the largest of all - Lake Fontana in Swain County. Some of our creeks are as large as rivers, Caney Fork, Scotts Creek and Cove Creek are just a few of them. Our rivers are famous for rafting, kayaking and trout fishing - the Nantahala, Little Tennessee, Tuckasegee and Oconaluftee Rivers have beautiful waters and evocative names.
I am so appreciative of working in real estate in Western North Carolina. Not only do I get to work with an incredible variety of people and personalities but I am out and about and surrounded by the splendor of these Appalachian Mountain ranges. Even after living here for more than 25 years I am still in awe of the breathtaking scenery and know I will NEVER take this area for granted.
I hope several of you will respond with at least one or two things about your home area that you are thankful for...a picture would be welcome too.
