blue ridge mountains: Reintroduction of the Elk - Oconoluftee Farm Museum and Homestead - 10/25/12 10:46 PM
The best reason to have visitors in our area is that it makes us become tourists in one of our nation's favorite playgrounds.  The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway are two of the most visited outdoor attractions in the U.S.  The other day, we took my mother and brother to Gatlinburg, TN which is only a little more than an hour and a half from Dillsboro, NC.  I hoped before the day was over we'd get a chance to see elk in the park which were reintroduced to Western North Carolina back in 2001.   … (10 comments)

blue ridge mountains: The Drive Home is Something to Write About... - 10/21/12 02:30 PM
Dinner at the Pisgah Inn, located directly on the Blue Ridge Parkway just outside of Asheville, NC was fabulous.  The dining room was lively with chatter as all of the guests talked excitedly about their day in the mountains.  After dinner we continued on our travel on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Every once in a while I am reminded how fortunate I am to live in this area.      Can you imagine this view being on your way home?     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ … (11 comments)

blue ridge mountains: Showcasing NC Talent - Things to Do in the Mountains of Western NC - 10/07/12 04:15 AM
It is very early in the fall season and already there are so many Things to Do in the mountains of Western North Carolina.   Yesterday (Saturday) was a great time to be in the mountains of Western North Carolina.  We went to two Fall Festivals.  The first was in Dillsboro, NC and it was the first time the Colorfest was hosted in Dillsboro.  There seemed to be about 40 vendors, local craftspeople and artisans...all demonstrating their crafts.  The vendors were tucked in all the nooks and crannies that the historic Town of Dillsboro has to offer.  Situating the artists … (16 comments)

blue ridge mountains: Autumn Harbinger in the Mountains of Western North Carolina - 08/26/12 01:43 PM
It's easy enough to tell that autumn is coming to the mountains of Western North Carolina very soon. The shops all have their summer clothing on markdown and the evenings have been in the 50s.  During my walk I can tell that the underbrush is getting a little thinner and there are starting to be leaves on the ground and touches of yellow in the trees.  One of the truest harbingers of autumn though are the Buckeyes.  They started dropping in earnest about a week ago.       When we had our retail businesses, Leslie used to love to … (19 comments)

blue ridge mountains: The Most Ancient of Mountains - Wordless Wednesday - 06/27/12 09:11 PM
We’ve been hitting the ground running every day for the last several weeks working with local clients and people moving into the mountains of Western North Carolina. Those people moving here either for full or part time all share one thing in common…they want to be closer to these most ancient of mountains.

Last weekend I had dinner at the new house of our friends from Charlotte, NC and even though the food was excellent…my favorite part of the entire evening was witnessing their contentment in just being here. They both described the feeling of all of their stress … (34 comments)

blue ridge mountains: A Little Cabin in the Woods ~ Part of the Mountain Dream - 03/15/12 01:21 PM

The Blue Ridge Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains have long enticed people to come and have a piece of the mountain dream. A little cabin in the woods, doesn’t that sound like a perfect getaway?
When I first got into real estate in 2004, the little cabin in the woods was the hottest selling commodity in the business. The second home purchase was like bread and butter to us. Once the real estate market started suffering, one of the first casualties was the second home. Some people had all they could do just to hold onto their FIRST home. … (8 comments)

blue ridge mountains: Atmospheric Weirdness Rocks My Extended Personal Community - 03/02/12 09:08 PM

The atmospheric weirdness we’ve witnessed lately in countrywide weather reports used to touch me with sadness when I heard about the devastation to towns and areas I had only the vaguest of notions about where they were. My heart went out to the people who’d lost family members, friends, pets, personal belongings and sense of security in the briefest of moments when horrific tornadoes, hurricanes, fires or floods ripped through their homeland. It still does touch me profoundly when I think about these strangers and how narrow the band of separation is from their disaster becoming my own.
A new dawning … (20 comments)

blue ridge mountains: We Are A Generous Community~Revisiting Grove Park Inn for William Johnson - 02/24/12 08:21 PM

Do you have a mentor on ActiveRain? This is indeed a generous community and I have several mentors, but for photography…whether he knows it or not…my mentor is William Johnson from San Diego, California. When I was really new to AR…holy cow…I missed my one year anniversary! February 22nd, 2011. Anyway, as usual I’ve digressed. When I was brand new, William visited one of my posts and took a shine to my photos. He took half an hour out of his schedule and spent it with me on the phone giving me invaluable advice about how to edit better and … (8 comments)

blue ridge mountains: The Most Photographed Courthouse - 08/14/11 04:29 AM
Pulling off Hwy US74 at exit 83 will take you right into the heart of downtown Sylva, NC and the home of "the most photographed courthouse" via Grindstaff Cove Road.

Just after leaving the highway on your right is the attractive entrance to the Jackson County Administration Center.  Before the county made real estate documents available online, real estate agents, paralegals and attorneys spent a lot of time here.  It's still a favorite retreat for many who want to get some research done wih the county staff available to assist whenever you need them.

We're very fortunate in Jackson County.  Whenever … (19 comments)

blue ridge mountains: Southern Exposure - 08/13/11 01:58 AM

Today I've been thinking about southern exposure and the splendor of the skies over Balsam.

It's hard to believe our luck sometimes when I consider how fortunate we are to live in paradise of the mountains in Western North Carolina.

While I was transferring photos from my camera to a flash drive, I was struck by the number of shots I've taken of the skies from our own front porch, deck and upper yard.  There were dozens of them, no two alike.  That's just it...give me a few clouds and I could sit with a camera, take one shot every two … (2 comments)

blue ridge mountains: Wordless Wednesdays - The Magic Ingredient is Intimacy - 08/10/11 01:04 AM
I feel the magic of this area every day.

Is it any wonder that people for generations have flocked here to absorb the grandeur of the scenery?  It is so easy to imagine myself leaning over this balcony during the 1920s and feeling the same rush of emotion as I do now whenever I happen upon any vistas during my daily routine.

The secret magic ingredient is intimacy.  These most ancient of ranges in Western North Carolina invite you to be part of the mountains...not merely a spectator.

blue ridge mountains: Do You Take Where You Live for Granted? - Thoughts From Western North Carolina - 07/10/11 01:17 AM

Western North Carolina attracts a high number of out of state buyers who can't wait to move here. I like to think I will never take the magnificence of where I live for granted, but the buyer's eagerness to locate themselves and their families here keeps it all fresh in my mind to always be thankful for my surroundings.

Once the dog family is fed and walked, I am aware every morning of the blissful serenity of the mountains, woods and birds. As I sit here typing I can hear crows cawing, squirrels chattering, … (6 comments)

blue ridge mountains: Advice From a Tree in Sylva, North Carolina ~ Day Twenty Five of the 31 Days of May Challenge - 05/25/11 06:52 AM
Yes, I've had the opportunity to take Advice from A Tree.

We visited with a friend early yesterday evening at the Sylva Vista subdivision in Jackson County and left an hour later feeling like we had been on the most relaxing vacation.  We do see these views often in our travels, but rarely take the time to relax and simply just "be".

We soaked in the views and relished the gentle conversation with our good friend.  When you live in an area like ours, here in Sylva, North Carolina it is easy to be distracted from the realization … (13 comments)
