Summer is the height for burglaries. It is at this time that burglars look for empty houses. This according to the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association. Before you leave for your vacation, consider these tips to keep your home burglar proof while you are away.
- Ask your neighbor or relative, to look into the home while you are away. Leave a spare key with them. Ask them to pick up flyers, newspapers or mail. Have your neighbor park one of their cars on your garage. Or, ask your relative or neighbor to move yours once and a while.
- Stop all deliveries. Go to www.usps.com and put a hold on all your mail. This should minimize deliveries to your home while you are gone.
- If you have an alarm company, let them know the dates you'll be gone.
- If you have a Facebook or Twitter or any social media account, DO NOT announce your vacation. You'll never know who else has access to this information. And, whatever you do, don't post pictures of your trip while you are still on vacation. Wait till you get back home.
- Have your calls forwarded. If you have an answering machine, turn the volume off. You don't want an "unfriendly" who may be lurking nearby to suspect your home is vacant.
- Trim your shrubs and cut the lawn while you are gone. Better yet, ask your relative or neighbor to cut the lawn once a week while you are gone. Put your sprinklers on timer to keep up the appearance of a very lived in home.
- Whatever you do, DO NOT leave a spare key under the mat or in a shrub or flower pot. Leave the spare key with the neighbor or your relative.
