This is a re-blog of a post by Paula Hamilton.  I thought these were great tips and something we all should pay attention to. I think it's very important for stagers and inspectors to take note of too.

SHOWING IN THE HEAT ~ PRECAUTIONS & TIPS!

Heat

If you have been anywhere near a TV lately and have seen the news, you know how many parts of the country are experiencing EXTREME heat!  Here in The Woodlands and Houston, Texas areas we are melting!  For those of us in real estate, getting in and out of cars and homes can take its toll on everyone.  I had a client the other day who was in the beginning stages of heat exhaustion so this is very serious.

As an agent, there are a few things you can do to keep yourself and your clients more comfortable and safe when showing property in the heat.

  • Keep a small cooler in your car and full of water at all times when you are showing property right now.
  • Try and park in shady spots and use a window shield when you leave the car.
  • Don't leave purses in the car as your lipsticks and lotions will become a liquid mess.
  • ASK your clients to let you know how they are holding up.
  • Don't even attempt to look at homes that do not have the A/C on.
  • If looking at new construction, use the builder's website to see the plans that are in construction and just drive by them for right now.
  • Stash some small hand towels in your car that you can use if someone (including yourself) begins to feel the ill effects of the heat.  Placing a moist, cool cloth on the back of your neck can immediately help bring down the body temperature.
  • Refresh yourself with the signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion.  This is a serious condition and must be dealt with immediately.
  • Try and arrange your showings to take place in the mornings or the evenings to avoid the hottest part of the day.
  • Wear cool and light colored clothing.  This is truly a must.  Not a time for suits and ties, panty hose or any type of heavy clothing.
  • Wearing a hat right now is also not a bad idea.
  • Use your umbrella to shield you and your clients from the sun as you move in and out of properties.

Bottom line, this heat is serious business!  Hopefully Fall is on the way and we will see some relief.  In the meantime, be cool and be safe!

And don’t forget the kids. They can over heat very quickly. Having worked in Houston for years I can attest to how important it is to follow these guidelines.

It seems we're all experiencing this heat (yes, even in Canada!)  I've had Sellers refuse to leave for a few showings because it was too hot to remove the dogs and kids!!  The nice thing was the Buyers understood, lol
