Yes fall happens to be my favorite time of the year. I love all the vibrant fall colors, the weather is usually cooler and somehow I have more energy although this year you wouldn't know it.
For me it is not all love. I also hate the fall- why? because this is the time of year when all the leaves come tumbling down and you have a choice to address it now or next spring.
With a large yard with lots of trees I find myself spending hours raking. Although the tractor can be used to mulch some of the leaves. I still need to rake some of it. So, early in the morning or late evening you could see me raking and pulling leaves on a tarp to my compost pile.
Earlier I mentioned you can address the leaves now or in the spring. I personally like to do it now because during the early spring the leaves will be wet and hard to remove. On my garden bed I do not remove the leaves as it provides insulation for my perennials during the hash winter season.
THINGS TO DO TO GET YOUR YARD IN SHAPE.
- Make sure you are dressed for the occasion. What I mean is you will need long socks over your pants and wear a shirt or blouse with long sleeves. This is very important since the ticks are still very active and we are experiencing exceptionally warm weather.
- It is also a good time to walk your property to check out the health of your grass. If need be, you can still patch your lawns in areas where the grass is not doing so well.
- If you don't need to sow grass seed it is also a good time to fertilizer.
- Good time to also check the health of your trees. If you have dead trees this is a great time to remove them since the leaves are off.
- Pick up all the dead branches.
- Cut back perennials.
- The leaves you collect should be added to your compost pile , this will break down and will provide a great form of fertilizer for your plants after a harsh winter.
- Put away all the summer furniture.
- The deer usually damage my plants, so this is the time to buy burlap and other items to wrap up delicate plants.
- Last fall I used fishing line all around the backyard to keep the deer out and it did work. The damage to my plants was the least I have seen. However, keep in mind that if a service person needs to get back there he could find himself tangled in fishing line. This almost happened to the guy delivering my cooking gas.
