Three Point Litmus Test - Hire the Best People!

Have you ever made the frustrating mistake of expecting everyone you hire to perform at the same level of service that you personally provide?  A friend of us shared his Three Point Litmus Test for hiring only the best people.

We had lunch with former clients now friends at City Lights Cafe in Sylva yesterday.  This very topic of conversation came up because we were discussing Leslie's post about how we could all contribute to the economic recovery of the nation. If we all take responsibility and pay forward by sharing our wealth (meager though it may be) and hiring people to do jobs that may be keeping us from performing at our preferred level of service.

JobsLawn Maintenance | www.MoonDancerRealty.com such as lawn maintenance, handyman services, plumbers and other odd jobs.  We can't all be in the position of creating a large job force, but if we think hard about it there are tasks needing to be done around our homes and businesses that we can farm out.

Plumber | www.MoonDancerRealty.comHandyman | www.MoonDancerRealty.comSo, during our conversation we expressed our frustration that sometimes we do hire people and they aren't providing the level of service they led us to believe they would.  Steve said that during the interview process or the first day on the job, he and the person he is considering have a brief conversation.  He lets them know he is expecting three very simple but critical things from them, disappoint him on any of the three and no matter how much he might like them personally - he will not be able to work with them.

  • RETURN PHONE CALLS!!!  Depending upon the nature of the work, it is understood if someone is working with loud equipment you might not hear the phone but check the phone periodically and return the call no later than the end of the day the call was left.
  • SHOW UP WHEN YOU SAY YOU WILL!!! Not doing so indicates a clear disrespect of everyone's time and schedule but your own.  Legitimate reasons for not arriving as scheduled can be acceptable IF they are offered BEFORE you are supposed to start and only if you have an offer of when you will be able to reschedule.  Oh...and if legitimate reasons don't turn into ridiculous excuses (alarm didn't go off, traffic problems, car troubles, arguments with spouse, dog ate my homework).
  • DO THE WORK YOU SAY YOU WILL!!! and in the manner you indicated you could. Please, please, please don't say you are willing to do something and not tell me it is something you hate doing (pulling weeds, cleaning toilets, ironing), it will be made quickly apparent in the manner you accomplish (or not) that task.

The simplicity of this litmus test is that it can be applied to any profession.  Wouldn't you rather have this simple conversation upfront, whether you are the employer or the employed instead of dealing with frustration, exasperation, resentfulness and ultimately having to find someone new after all?

Well, I'm all about using the Three Point Litmus Test now.  Life is too busy and can be too stressful to not just hire the best people to start with.

Speaking of the best people...if you or someone you know will be undergoing a real estate transaction of any kind, hiring MoonDancer Realty is one of the best choices you will ever make.  WE WILL RETURN YOUR CALLS, WE WILL SHOW UP WHEN WE SAY WE WILL and not only can we assure you that WE WILL DO THE WORK WE SAY WE WILL - we'll do it so well you will recommend us to others!

Who we recommend is a reflection of our business as well.  If they do not perform the good quality of work, lazy and don't show up, etc. it makes us look bad.  I work hard to keep an excellent list of good quality and accountable vendors I can trust.  Makes me look great and continues the image of good business!

Mona -  I live and work in a small town and this rings so true. We all don't know each other but I'm guessing it's pretty close and reputations are fragile.

This is great Mona. My answer to your first question: yes, yes and yes! It definitely shows in the quality of the work whether or not it was an enjoyable task. I have found the best work is truly done by people who have a passion for what they do! Your passion for Real Estate has been evident in every single blog.

Hi Connie, one of the things that started this conversation was that initially we liked the guy's work that we had hired so much that we referred him out.  It wasn't until almost a year later that he started getting slack and then we heard from our clients that the same was happening to them.  Mess with us if you dare, but do not risk our reputation with our clients.

You got it Charlie. This is a very small town and while the people we recommended this person to experienced the same decline in reliable workmanship, they never blamed us. We blame us for not following up to make sure he was performing well.

Hello Andrea, your posts reveal the same ethical standards and anyone who hires you is a fortunate individual indeed. Thanks.

Hi Mona - the 3 Point Litmus test is a great one - your high standards of professionalism are evident in this post! I've found that letting people I hire (and those that hire me) know that I will be following up at various points to candidly receive and give feedback, to ensure the level of service is as expected, helps to keep quality of service high.  (And to make sure the expectations, of all parties, are continually articulated and reinforced).  Great post!

Hi Mona - We have worked really hard over the years to develop a team of qualified people that we can recommend to our clients, and we have the same standards you list in your 3-point test. It's just amazing how, even with good up-front communication of our expectations, so few manage to maintain these standards over time. When we find someone who does, we hang onto them for dear life.

Hi Karen, they are such simple points but they also establish the rules of engagement.  Our friend even says he tells the potential hire that if even one rule is broken they will have to find someone new.

Hello Dick, it is hard work to develop that team...we guard it like crazy.  I think we may have to implement some follow up though to make sure the folks we've referred to are getting a good job done.

Mona - more often than not, the job isn't done on time, up to the standards they promised and they aren't great about returning phone calls...once you've hired them that is. Good 3 point test and definitely necessary. I finally compiled a list of vendors I trust and they have been great. I don't mind paying good money for great work!

I like that test.. sounds very reasonable. I am thinking of hiring a runner to put up signs and stuff like that.. I will try to use that test.

Hi Kristine, it's a reasonable thing to pay good money for good work...and to find people you trust enough to send them to your clients and friends.  Nothing worse than having that trust shattered.  I'll bet you live up to any promises you make.

Hey Sheila, isn't it still kind of hot in Greenville to make someone be a runner? lol.  Use the test, it should improve your odds of not having to find a replacement runner.

Those three points are enough for me, Mona.  They will separate the wheat from the chaff.

Hi Jane, its all in the interest of keeping it simple.  After all, aren't we tired of bending over? lol It boils down to mutual respect.

Mona, amen to those three!  I often find that we win jobs because we can do those three things!  Especially returning phone calls and showing up on time!

I think I might just re-blog this, as it's a good post!

And congrats on getting to 100k!  Woohoo!

Hi Jeremy, you strike me as someone who would definitely pass the litmus test.  Thanks for the congrats...it was a bunch of work for sure.  Now there's the contest on the 30 day challenge for Localism posts...Yikes, only 50 minutes left to post.
