Our family has had many special moments in the CVIC Hall including the Rotary Paper Airplane contest. The kids made planes, went up on the balcony, and launched them. Prizes were awarded for longest distance, longest time, most aerobatic, and other creative prizes that the Rotarians thought up. Fun was had by all.
The hall saw an extensive retrofit in the last decade, or so, where the walls, lighting, kitchen, etc. got all dolled up and modernized … with a historic flair. The downtown corridor has also seen nice improvements and new businesses while all the while, in the middle of the action, is the CVIC hall. Site of many weddings, plays, performances, political meetings, elections, town meetings, dances, feeds, high school proms, etc. A great community asset for gatherings to conduct their business, meet together, celebrate with one another.
Our family has a unique fond memory of the hall. Through a series of events, we acquired the old piano that was in the hall for many years. Many a music teacher pounded out concert songs for kids to sing to on that piano. It was rough, but it was special to us. When we were moving it to our house about 15 or 20 years ago, one of the movers, a man in his mid-fifties, asked about the piano. When told of its history he said he remembered it, Mrs. So And So (the name of the music teacher he had), and all the times he sang to it. Then he bent over and looked under the keyboard. We asked him what he was doing, “Looking to see if my gum is still there!” he responded. We all laughed. We since donated the piano to the town of Minden and they had it totally refinished. It can be seen in the Town of Minden office, right next to the CVIC Hall.
Community centers are essential in a small town. Camaraderie is so important to the development and continuity of smaller communities and the CVIC Hall has served its community well. Come join the festivities as 100 years of memories are celebrated while new ones are being made.
