I-405 and Eastside Projects Update

New signal green lights transit, pedestrian improvements on SR 522 in Lake Forest Park

On Wednesday, Oct. 17 crews activated a new signal system at NE 153rd Street on SR 522 in Lake Forest Park. A new transit pullout provides a safer location for buses to pick up riders with fewer traffic and transit delays. The new signal allows pedestrians safer access to the transit stops on both sides of the roadway.

Crews began construction in fall 2006 and pushed hard to complete this project a month ahead of schedule. This is one of several projects collectively known as the SR 522 - I-5 to I-405 Multimodal Project , designed to improve transit access, mobility and safety for drivers and pedestrians along the SR 522 corridor.

WSDOT invites contractors to learn about upcoming construction projects

If you're a contractor interested in working with WSDOT on upcoming highway projects, you're invited to attend a free business open house . This is an opportunity for prime contractors and subcontractors - both certified Disadvantaged Minority and Women's Business Enterprises (DMWBE) and non-certified contractors - to learn about upcoming projects scheduled to be advertised for bid in the next twelve months. Get information on the size, timing and scope of upcoming projects and speak with WSDOT staff and representatives from the State Office of Minority and Women's Business Enterprises, Washington State Ferries and the Urban Corridors Office. This is also a great chance to network with other prime contractors, subcontractors and WSDOT staff.

Metal theft is costing taxpayers

Metal thieves are continuing to target WSDOT property, costing taxpayers thousands of dollars and damaging important highway safety equipment. Thieves recently stole copper wiring out of the conduits that power electronic message signs near Snoqualmie Pass. Safety lighting at interchanges and rest areas were also disabled. For some stretches of I-90, we have no other way to communicate with travelers, so they are literally left in the dark if these signs and lights are without power.

WSDOT has been working closely with the State Patrol to combat metal theft. Here's how you can help. If you see suspicious activity, call 911 and describe in detail what you observed. We have also created a Web site to report suspicious activities .

How can you tell the difference between highway workers and possible thieves? WSDOT crews and contractors are required to wear hard hats and reflective safety vests. Also, their trucks will probably have the WSDOT logo or contractor's name/logo.

Vote on your favorite display for "the best time to travel during the holidays"

We have used several different styles of graphics to display the best time to travel during holiday weekends. Planning ahead by leaving a little later or leaving a little earlier will help you avoid peak travel times and arrive at your destination with minimum delay. We're hoping you could take some time to visit our blog and let us know which of the graphs shown there helps you make that decision with the greatest of ease.
