Sonoma Dogs Raise Money for Cancer Research
The residents of Sonoma Valley are known for their volunteer work and dogs in Sonoma are no exception. A pack of people living in Sonoma and their best four-legged friends are gaining notoriety for an annual fundraiser aimed at finding cures for cancer in animals...and humans.
For the third year Sonoma dogs and their owners are stepping out to raise money for the UC Davis Comparative Cancer Center. The "Walk with the Dogs" is sponsored by Sonoma Valley Dog Owners and Guardians (SVDOG) and part of the proceeds will also benefit that organization.
This year the event is scheduled for Sunday October 2nd. Dog walkers and their pooches are to gather in the Sebastiani Winery parking lot at 4th Street East and Lovall Valley Road and all will travel along the Sonoma Bike Path between 4th Street East and the General Vallejo Home State Park. You don't have to go all the way but it's a very nice little jaunt and if you can make it you'll be glad you did.
There is a registration fee of $20 if you pre-register. The fee is $25 if you want to pay on the day of the walk. For more information you can check out the SVDOG website where you can register online.
I would love to participate with my canine companion, Coco, but she's got a little issue that makes walking these days rather uncomfortable. She has an unusual condition called Symetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy (SLO.) It's a auto-immune deficiency that is described by dog health experts as a benign form of Lupus. Yes, dogs get Lupus, too. Anyway, it effects her nails and every so often she loses one which is pretty painful. So, this year, Coco and I will just make a donation but we sure hope a lot of dogs and folks show up for this event. It's a great way to get exercise, support a good cause, and make new furry, and not-so-furry, friends.
