Wind Energy in Colorado is Big Business!

Transporting wind turbine blades via train

The popularity of wind energy around the world is not new news.  In Colorado we can see evidence of this as the tall turbines that dot the landscape of our high plains!

This morning I had a fun experience as we were out and about early to see turbine parts being transported by train.

Each blade took up TWO flatbed cars. The train must have been a mile long, for all I could see was turbine blade after blade!

It was amazing!

I don't often think of "how did this get there" when I see the turbine towers across the state.  I do  marvel at their size and really love the idea of using wind for energy.  But now that I've witnessed these parts in transit, I have a new-found appreciation for how much this industry and science is impacting our country.

Enjoy my images, taken from the passenger seat of a almost speeding car!

Kristal - Those photos are really crazy!  I cannot believe how big those blades are!  We have wind energy here in Southern California on the outskirts of the desert, but I never realized how big those machines really were!

Kym,

I couldn't beleive it either!  That's why it was easy to convince my husband to chase the train!  It was so much fun...guess I'm easily entertained!

Hi Kristal - In Ontario, they were thinking of placing numerous windmills just off the Lake Ontario shoreline, including in the Toronto area.  However, it appears that the proposal has been dropped.

Kristal.  Very good pictures considering you were in the car.  That is amazing when you consider the size of those things.  I recently went back to Kansas (oh boy) and took a few quick shots of the wind to energy farm.  It is an amazing site.

Thesse are pretty cool. I have never seen them being transported, just the hundreds and hundreds of turbines in the wind farms out in the desert and east of San Diegoi along Route 8. You can see them for miles and they are HUGE!

I hope we see more and more.

Hi Kristal, I've never seen them on a train like that either, wow!  I have seen one blade on the bed of a semi traveling down the interstate, and it was an over sized truck to carry it. They really are amazing close up.  Keep them coming!

Hi Kristal,

Great shots. Awesome! Go Green! I have only seen wind farms with turbines in the dessert near Palm Springs, CA. They've been there for at least 20 years.  NYC may have them on bridges and skyscrapers one day. IMHO it is better than dirty oil particularly foreign oil.
