THINGS TO DO IN MURPHY NC - THE BEGINNING OF A SERIES
We have had the idea of producing a “Localism Series” about Things to Do In Murphy NC to generate interest in our area. Recently, at the end of our ActiveRain MeetUp, we had the opportunity to run the idea by Catherine Rayburn-Trobaugh. Cathy, as she is affectionately known by her friends, is an exceptional professional writer, author, educator and, most importantly, a Rainmaker! Of course, she’s also a good friend and cherished client!
Cathy is currently teaching an English Writing Class at the local community college. What better venue. A breath of fresh air! With youth comes the ability to rebound from adversity, to enjoy the long days of summer, indulge in spirited romance and, hopefully, in this instance, BE CREATIVE!!! Our hopes are to gather some fresh ideas and renewed spirit for our series on Things To Do In Murphy NC.
This evening, we had the distinct pleasure of meeting the group of fourteen students at Tri-County Community College. After a grand introduction, we presented our goal for this writing assignment: Describe to us those tucked away off-the-radar places in our community that we’ve forgotten about or, perhaps, never knew existed. The activities you would want to know about if you were a visitor to this area. In other words fun things to do in Murphy NC!
While this sounds like a simple assignment, if you give it some thought, you will realize it may be more difficult that you imagine. Why you ask? Because we become so accustomed to our surroundings that we become oblivious to them. It might be compared to living in Orlando, home to more theme parks per square mile than any other part of the world, and saying to yourself “there is nothing to do”.
Sometimes it takes a breath of fresh air to provide a new perspective, and especially when it comes to all those activities and special places that are right outside our door.
In the coming weeks, the student authors will be submitting their articles to be considered for publishing on our blog. They have to be informative, interesting, and, most importantly, grammatically correct!!! First and foremost this IS a college English Writing class! In order that you may get to know them a little better we will be including a short bio and photograph of each student author who is selected to be featured.
These young people are trying to better their lives and some even want to pursue a career in writing. When you read their published articles, we hope that you will take the opportunity to provide some encouraging words for their efforts.
We look forward to giving you a new perspective on our little town and things to do in Murphy NC. Hopefully you are looking forward to it as well!
