How do we market to Gen Y?

How do we Market to Gen Y? Or even better, do we really understand who Gen Y is? Wikipedia defines them here:

"The term Generation Y first appeared in an August 1993 Ad Age editorial to describe teenagers of the day, which they defined, at that time, as separate from Generation X, and then aged 12 or younger (born after 1981), as well as the teenagers of the upcoming ten years.[16] Since then, the company has sometimes used 1982 as the starting birth year for this generation.[17] "Generation Y" alludes to a succession from "Generation X."

Knowing that there are a group of potential buyers in the twenty to thirty age group that are moving into the market (even though slowly these days) begs the question- Who are these young people and how do they differ from previous generations?

We know that adults in this age bracket are very tech savvy, very internet and smart phone connected and they have the capacity to educate themselves so much better than older adults of today.

If, as Realtors, we continue to run from the latest technology and market the way we always have in the past, we run the risk of also running out of clients at some point. We will, because even as the adult population ages, older adults are also becoming very tech savvy, learning the latest technologies as well. So we will also run the risk of looking old fashioned even to adults who may be looking to move in a different direction as they age.

Hiding our heads in the sand and pretending that technology is just too difficult will eventually leave our wallets empty. We need to embrace the future as exciting and use it to entice more business our way.

So be brave and get out there. You will only win in the end. And really, if I can figure out much of this techie stuff, anyone can. Now when things are so slow, would be the perfect time to get your techie side on! Give it a real try.

How are you Marketing to the Gen Y adults? I would love to hear!

That is a great way to show you are tech savvy. Hiring an assistant in that very age group gives you a good heads up.

Hi janeAnne- Thanks, I really think we can sometimes ignore the next big wave, due to the fear we hold onto. Anyone can really learn this techie stuff if they really want to . Those that do will get the win in the end...

Jerri,

Great post and an eye opener for anyone who is not keeping up.

I have a dear friend who co-Authored a book - Gen Y Now by Buddy Hobart and Herb Sendek.....a great read and answers all the questions, at least for me.

I even connected w/Buddy through his primary company as a Consultant developing and training a State Organization on customer service to answer this big question on dealing with the Gen Y'ers.
