Upper Marlbor MD Real Estate: Marketing- I Have Unsubscribed to Your Emails

By

In a mass sea of realtors, if you don't swim, you'll definitely drown or be looking for someone to throw you a life line.  Though the current market has challenged our level of perseverance, there are still basic things that we do to get noticed and lure business.  We send out monthly email campaigns to prospects, feeding potential clients with nice little cards, fliers, and newsletters to remind them that we exist in this crowded sea.  But what happens when our monthly emails start to get rejected and you receive a message from your database saying, "Someone has just unsubscribed to your emails."

I think when I first started campaigning, I would get very offended by the unsubscribing messages.  My thoughts were, "Don't these people know that I have to market myself to get business."  I guess, many of these people didn't really care and was more concerned about the emails clogging up their in-box.  Though I would only email once or no more than twice a month, it seemed that even that was too much.  When I reached out to some people I knew and inquired why they unsubscribed, they told me it was done in error.  I thought to myself, "How can you mistakenly reach down at the bottom of the email and unsubscribe?" Sounds a little fishy to me.

Well, of course I had to learn that this was a part of the business and you don't take this personal.  Also, a part of this is to make sure you are sending out relevant information to your sphere of influence.  This helps to prevent perspectives from going AWOL.  However, what you feel is relevant might not be relevant to them (i.e. your wonderful new listing).  I guess the message is to  keep pressing forward with your marketing and not let unsubscribers dishearten you.

Now, getting to the good stuff.  I am still amazed at the number of agents who unsubscribe to your emails.  I guess even we forget the power of marketing to one another and creating relationships that might just come in handy down the line (i.e., your wonderfully written offer submitted to the agent you unsubscribed to).  I have opened myself up to receiving emails from agents, lenders, and other affiliates.  For me, it just makes sense.  It's a great way to network with one another and use directly emailing to agents as a quick way to get out information about your listings.  An agent just might have a client who's looking for a property like yours.  A builder or lender might have needed information on incentives and programs that are crucial to getting your client into a property.  The list goes on and on.  With this said, why in the world would an agent unsubscribe to another agent's emails?  Whatever the reason is, it that agent's and not mine.

Thus, when you see the unsubscribe message, stare it straight in the face and say, "You don't bother me anymore."  Keep finding new prospects and entering them into your database, making sure it is constantly growing.  Persistence will win you business, not the rejection of someone who doesn't want to receive your emails again.

Timothy, I'm a member of our MLS... but an associate member ... I'm not an agent. HOWEVER, I get all the property flyers and newsletters and "agent stuff" because I am an MLS member. So, yes, when I get those I do unsubscribe mostly because I'm never sure if the agent is being charged per delivery ...so for me to keep getting them and for you to keep being charged and paying for them just seems so needless and unfair (to you).

Judith, I can see that angle, but I guess it depends on the service you're using.  I have already paid an annual fee to use my contact management system with Exit Realty.  If I didin't use it, I would definitely be waisting money.  At the end of the day, the unsubscribers are a part of the territory.  LOL!
