Fix It On the Cheap – Solutions from the Dollar Store

It's that time of year – a lot of central New Jersey home owners are getting into sprucing up their homes in anticipation of colder days ahead. Seasonal cleaning often uncovers loads of “smallish” repairs that need to be made, and if you're like us, you don't want to have to play break-the-bank to make those fixes. Thanks to houselogic.com, we've got some great suggestions for making those needed repairs with great finds from your local 99¢ store! There are five tips in all; we'll offer one in each of our upcoming blogs. Just watch out for the impulse to buy more than you intended at the dollar store!

If you’ve ever had a scuff mark on a colored countertop, you know that it can unfortunately become the room’s focal point. The fix is surprisingly simple! You'll need: crayons (99¢), a spatula knife (99¢), a microwave-safe bowl (99¢ - unless you have one in which you're willing to melt crayons, in which case you SAVE 99¢!). Total cost: $2.97.

How to do it:

  • Pick the crayon whose color comes closest to matching your countertop. Peel off the paper and place it in the bowl.

  •  Pop the crayon and bowl in the microwave.
  • Pour the hot, melted crayon onto the scuff mark and work it into the indentation with the spatula knife.

  • Scrape off the excess with the spatula knife.

The crayon mixture will harden and dry quickly, erasing your countertop flaw.
