My oldest brother together with his wife and daughter took my mother home to the Philippines after visiting us here since June.  Originally it was only my brother who was supposed to go but at the last minute my sister-in-law and their daughter decided to tag along.  They were there for less than two weeks and were back in the states on Oct. 18.

My sister-in-law went back to work the next day and to my brother’s surprise, she came home at 1 PM.  She was not feeling well.  She had a terrible headache and felt very tired and exhausted.  She never got sick before and attributed the condition to jet lag.  The next day, she got worse and started running high fever.  They called the doctor and made an appointment.  The doctor after examining her admitted her to the hospital immediately.  The doctor informed my brother that if they waited another day, she could have died.  She was so sick.

First, they were told she had pneumonia.  They put her on IVs.  She could not eat.  She was so nauseous, had a terrible backache and headache.  The pain was so bad, they had to give her morphine shots.  They took blood tests.  When I called my brother the third day, I was told she got dengue fever and there is no cure.  I looked dengue fever on the internet and looked for the cause.  It can only be transmitted by an infected mosguito.  I suspected she could’ve been bitten in the Philippines.  They had some cases of dengue fever there lately.  My brother was almost in tears talking to me that I had to cut my phone call short.  I called my mom in the Philippines and she told me that she was already saying novena to the Blessed Mother.  I prayed so hard and asked friends to say prayers for her too.  My brother did the same thing in New Jersey.

I called again the next day and my brother said there was no change.  They now had her on five IVs and given shots of morphine every 5 hours.  In the meantime, we kept all our prayers going.  Then on the fifth day, she finally was able to eat a little solid food.  I have been calling my brother everyday.  I tried to call her once at the hospital but she could barely talk so I just talked to my brother at his home at night.  But then when I called on the sixth day, my brother told me she was home.  She was released from the hospital late afternoon.  She was still weak but the doctor said he just needed lots of rest and she could do that at home.  She would be on medication for the next 12 weeks and was told to take it easy.  I finally talked to her at home.  Then she told me she had legionnaire pneumonia which is a fatal disease.  The dengue fever is still in question as they are still doing tests on it.  She still has a long way to go but she is on the mend.

Amazingly, she did recover pretty fast.  We thought we lost her on the fourth day.  My family is ardent Catholic and we all believe in the miracle of prayer.  We are so thankful to God for keeping my sister-in-law alive.

I do believe in miracles, yes I do. Have I seen miracles before, yes. They are a wonderful blessing.

Rosalinda - Dengue fever is very serious, but legionnaire's disease is scary as well.  I wonder if she had both.  Thank heavens she is on the mend.  It wasn't her time to go.  I hope her recovery is speedy and uneventful.  What an ordeal for your family!

Rosalinda, wow... amazing! And now on the mend, that is a great thing. Sometimes we don't know what, or why, or how, but how we handle it is the key to everything.

Susie - I do believe in miracle and this is the second time this happens to my family.  The first one was about ten years ago but that's another story.

Gail - It was very scary.  I talked to her yesterday and she was telling me that she tires so easily and could not do much.  She lost 10 pounds while at the hospital because she could not eat for 5 days.  I forgot to ask her about dengue fever if it was positive.  Nonetheless, she got all the symptons.

Andrea - We really thought she was gone.  When the doctor said there was no cure, I could not halp thinking what will my brother do without her.  She even thought it was the end because at some point, she was giving my brother instructions on what he was supposed to do when she died.

Yes the Miracle of Prayer.  My kids make fun of me all the time because I do not listen to the radio in the car, I pray.  Laugh all you want kiddies, my prayers keep them safe.  I have no doubt in that.
