It's official.  The classic rock band 3 Dog Night has been booked for the "Moon Pie over Mobile" festivities for New Years Eve 2011.  The news was announced during a meeting which included city officials, business leaders and represenatives from the Retirement Systems of Alabama.  Mobile mayor Sam Jones praised the event for the financial impact it has on the local economy.

The first Moon Pie drop occured in 2007 when a 12-foot, illuminated Moon Pie was dropped from a crane near Cooper Riverside Park.  In 2010 it was moved to a 34-story RSA Bank Building and this is considered the permanent home for festival.  Organizers of the event announced that RSA who ownsRaycom Media plans a 45-minute telecast which will air in about 20 cities, mostly in the South, including Birmingham, Montgomery, Biloxi, Dothan, Cape Giradeau, MO, Lubbock, TX, and Ottuma, Iowa.  WKRG has commited to broadcast coverage of the proceedings.

According to organizers, a new stage will be located at Royal streets and Government which will allow better views of the fireworks and accompanying laser light show.  A new VIP area will be located on the fourth floor of the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel.

A couple of of their hits include "Mama Told Me Not to Come," "Black and White" and "Joy to the World".
