Silly Social Media Measurement Tools
I read this blog from Gerry Michaels and he is the ultimate techno geek on Active Rain and so in the interest of blogging humanity I thought this needed to be re blogged.
Alright we are all aware of the shot in the foot Klout pulled a few weeks ago, however while all that is interesting reading, what does it really matter? The notion that one's social media influence could actually be measured is actually absurd. nobody knows or really cares what your Klout score is. I can say with experience that the same holds true for Klout, holds true for sites such as Peerindex, anything that attempts to put a number score on your particular social media influence is just plain silly. The inconsistency and unreliability that is Klout and Peerindex merely justifies my low opinion of such sites. While Klout is unreliable, Peerindex is wildly inconsistent, I have had my Peerindex score change by 20+ points up or right before my eyes, while on the site. I really have a hard time taking either one seriously.
After all what would be the reason for keeping track of such a silly number, can you compare and get anything out of a higher score, I don't think so, Klout does offer some perks, yet none are earth shattering, or can't do without perks. The only real reason anyone would even want to check on something of the sort would be to learn how to improve their social media status. I can understand that concept, however if that is the case there are much better tools to utilize to fulfill that purpose.
Lets take for example Twitsprout. Twitsprout is a wonderful tool that helps you understand your twitter activity, done in a great dashboard, last 7 days format. I use Twitsprout regularly and highly recommend it. The information is nicely laid out for quick transfer understanding, yet the best part is that there is no "score". This is a well thought out, useful tool as opposed to the Klout, Peerindex score model. Twitsprout keeps things personal so that you can see where and how you are doing, and what is effective.
If you are looking for a more indepth look at your social media activity, I highly recommend Twentyfeet. You can measure your Twitter activity as well as your Facebook activity, and Youtube activity. One can really get an indepth look at a number of different aspects of your activities. Much like Twitsprout the information is presented in an easy to read, dashboard, graph fashion, and also like Twitsprout, Twentyfeet does not "score" your activity. It is meant to be used as a social media personal growth and improvement tool.
Neither of these tools are intended for the casual user of social media, they are geared more toward those that use social media in a business fashion. If you are a grandma on FB simply to keep in touch with grandkids etc, you don't need to check either of these sites out. If you are trying to improve your social media presence and are looking for a good, useful analytics tool or two, Twentyfeet and Twitsprout should be your first stops.
